The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has not yet received the budgetary allocations necessary to conduct the 2027 general elections. Despite the pending funds, the commission provided the following updates regarding election preparations:

  • Timeline Compliance: The commission is still within the legal timeframe established by the Electoral Act, 2026, which mandates that election funding be released at least six months before the general election.

  • Equipment Procurement: Arrangements are underway to procure new election materials, including Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices to replace those that were lost, damaged, or unrecovered during previous cycles. The commission’s Director of ICT recently traveled to China to facilitate these orders, noting that the procurement process is time-consuming.

  • Technological Testing: INEC plans to conduct mock presidential election exercises to test its technology. This initiative aims to prevent a recurrence of the technical glitches that impacted the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal during the 2023 elections.

  • Proposed Budget: The commission has proposed a budget of ₦873.78 billion for the 2027 polls, which includes significant funding for technology, election operations, and capital expenditures.
