ADC Leadership Crisis Explodes: Court Refuses To Drop Mark Removal Suit Despite Bias Allegations.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed until June 30 proceedings in a legal challenge aimed at preventing former Senate President David Mark and others from acting as leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). While representatives for the various parties were in attendance, Suleiman Usman (SAN), counsel for David Mark, was notably absent when the case was called. Justice Peter Lifu initially stood the matter down for 15 minutes to accommodate Usman; however, following the hearing of a separate case, the court ultimately directed the lawyers to select a new date.
This latest delay follows a ruling on June 16, where Justice Lifu dismissed motions from the ADC and the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, which had requested his recusal from the case based on allegations of bias. The court deemed those motions meritless and ordered the ADC and Aregbesola to each pay N1 million in costs to Gombe.
At the heart of the suit—docketed as FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025—is Gombe’s request for an order to restrain Mark, Aregbesola, and the members of their interim National Working Committee from holding themselves out as the party’s leadership. Gombe contends that their appointment violated both the Electoral Act and the constitution of the ADC. The defendants named in the suit include the ADC, Mark, Aregbesola, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu.
