Benedict Etanabene, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Delta State and current House of Representatives member for the Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie constituency, has refuted the notion that former President Goodluck Jonathan would tarnish his legacy by re-entering politics. Speaking to reporters in Abuja on Tuesday, Etanabene advocated for Jonathan to run in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that periods of national crisis demand proven leadership.

While Jude Imagwe, a media aide to the former President, has previously stated that Jonathan is not preparing for a 2027 presidential bid, Etanabene maintains that calling upon experienced leaders during national emergencies is a common practice in established democracies. He pointed to the political comebacks of Donald Trump in the United States and John Mahama in Ghana as evidence that voters often return to tested leaders when faced with challenges. Etanabene emphasized that when a nation faces significant problems, the focus should be on identifying and utilizing individuals with the capacity to solve them rather than discouraging their involvement.

Furthermore, the lawmaker rejected the argument that Jonathan should only serve as an elder statesman, stating that it is unreasonable to wait for a total national collapse before seeking his intervention. He recalled that during Jonathan’s previous administration, Nigeria held the title of Africa’s largest economy and democratic institutions operated with healthy independence. Highlighting Jonathan’s past commitment that his political ambition was not worth the loss of any Nigerian life, Etanabene suggested this philosophy is exactly what is needed to bridge current national divides. He concluded by calling on Jonathan to sacrifice his comfort to answer the call of millions of citizens and run in 2027 to help secure the country’s future.
