A bystander was wounded during the exchange of gunfire, though their condition has not yet been released. No Secret Service personnel were injured in the incident.

President Donald Trump was inside the Executive Mansion working on diplomatic negotiations regarding Iran when the chaos unfolded but remained entirely unharmed, according to agency officials.

Exchange of Fire Near Security Perimeter

Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service communications chief, stated that the incident began shortly after 6:00 PM. A male suspect approached the outer security barrier, brandished a firearm, and began shooting.

“Secret Service Police returned fire, striking the suspect, who was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” Guglielmi said in an official statement. “During the shooting, one bystander was also struck by gunfire.”

Multiple U.S. media outlets have since identified the deceased gunman as 21-year-old Nasire Best of Maryland. Investigators revealed that Best had a documented history of mental health struggles and had prior interactions with Secret Service personnel.

“Sounded Like Dozens of Gunshots”

The gunfire triggered an immediate, massive security response. Law enforcement cordoned off surrounding streets, and National Guard troops were deployed to block access to key areas of downtown Washington, D.C.

Witnesses described a scene of sudden panic. Reid Adrian, a Canadian tourist visiting the area, told reporters that the gunfire initially sounded like fireworks. “We heard probably 20 to 25 [shots]… and then everyone started running,” he recalled.

Journalists stationed on the White House North Lawn were ordered by security to immediately flee and take cover inside the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room. ABC News correspondent Selina Wang, who was filming a broadcast segment when the incident began, noted on social media that it “sounded like dozens of gunshots.”

President and Lawmakers Respond

Early Sunday morning, President Trump took to Truth Social to commend the rapid response of the security teams, while revealing details about the suspect’s apparent motives.

“Thank you to our great Secret Service and Law Enforcement for the swift and professional action taken this evening against a gunman near the White House, who had a violent history and possible obsession with our Country’s most cherished structure,” Trump posted.

On Capitol Hill, House Republicans released a joint statement on social media expressing relief over the President’s safety and calling for an end to civil unrest. “Thank God President Trump is safe,” the statement read. “Endless gratitude to the Secret Service for their immediate, heroic response. Political violence has to stop.”
