Reports indicate that Adeola secured a total of 304,055 votes in the primary held across the 20 local government areas of the state on Thursday.

The Chairman of the Ogun State Governorship Electoral Committee, Wale Ohu, announced the result after completing the collation of votes from the exercise.

Ohu disclosed that 305,287 accredited voters participated in the primary election.

He further stated that Adeola’s sole opponent, Abayomi Samako Hunye, did not record any vote in the contest.

Following the announcement, the electoral committee chairman declared Adeola the duly elected APC governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Ogun State, adding that the result would be forwarded to the party’s National Working Committee for ratification.

This development confirms Adeola as the APC flagbearer ahead of the 2027 governorship election in the state.

Speaking after his victory was declared, Adeola expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, describing him as a key mentor who has supported his political journey over the years.

He recalled his political progression from the Lagos State House of Assembly to the House of Representatives and currently the Senate, where he is serving a third term, crediting Tinubu’s influence throughout his career.

Adeola also thanked former Ogun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba and incumbent Governor Dapo Abiodun for their support in his emergence as the party’s consensus candidate.

He commended APC leaders, delegates, and stakeholders for what he described as their commitment to unity, peace, and internal democracy within the party.

The senator pledged not to take the confidence of party members for granted, describing his emergence as a call to service.

According to him, his administration would focus on building on the achievements of Governor Abiodun while driving inclusive growth, infrastructure development, economic expansion, and people-centred governance in Ogun State.

Governor Abiodun, in his remarks, praised the peaceful conduct of the primaries, noting that the party demonstrated unity and maturity in its decision-making process.

He commended members who prioritised the interest of the party over personal ambitions and expressed satisfaction with the smooth conduct of the exercise.

Party leaders and supporters also applauded the outcome, describing it as a strong step toward the APC retaining power in Ogun State in the 2027 elections.

The APC further stated that the peaceful conduct of the primary reflects internal unity and readiness among stakeholders ahead of the general elections.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has emphasized that any proposed state police services must possess guaranteed financial independence to protect them from potential manipulation by governors, political actors, criminal elements, and other powerful interests. Key aspects of Bamidele’s proposal and the National Assembly’s approach include:

  • Addressing Stakeholder Concerns: Bamidele acknowledged that fears regarding the potential abuse of state police by influential individuals are legitimate and well-founded, noting that these concerns are partially rooted in Nigeria’s experience with regional police control during the First Republic.

  • Multi-layered Safeguards: The National Assembly is working to develop a system of checks and safeguards designed to ensure professional discipline, institutional independence, and financial autonomy.

  • Judiciary-Style Funding: To prevent police chiefs from being subject to the “whims and caprices” of state governors, Bamidele suggested a funding model similar to that of the judiciary, which is protected under the Constitution and does not require routine executive approval.

  • Constitutional Guarantees: Bamidele stated that the 1999 Constitution should provide guaranteed funding sources for both State Commissioners of Police and State Police Service Commissions.

  • Continued Engagement: The National Assembly intends to maintain stakeholder engagement throughout the constitutional amendment process required to establish state police services across the country.
