Reports indicate that a majority of first-term governors secured automatic return tickets to contest for re-election, while several outgoing governors also succeeded in installing their preferred successors through largely consensus-based primaries.

Governors who emerged unopposed as APC flagbearers for the 2027 elections include Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, Umaru Bago of Niger, Dikko Radda of Katsina, Nasir Idris of Kebbi, Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Uba Sani of Kaduna, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, and Umar Namadi of Jigawa.

In addition, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; Senator Olamilekan Adeola of Ogun; Kingsley Chinda of Rivers; and Mustapha Gubio of Borno also emerged as consensus candidates in their respective states.

In Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Tonye Cole, and Dakorinama George-Kelly all withdrew from the contest, allowing Kingsley Chinda to emerge as the sole aspirant.

However, the primaries were not without disputes in states such as Oyo, Kwara, Bauchi, and Taraba.

The APC national secretariat had to suspend the Kwara governorship primary midway on Thursday and later announced its rescheduling to Friday.

In Taraba, Governor Agbu Kefas faced strong opposition from former Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo, who demanded transparency and fairness in the process.

Similarly, in Oyo, former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, rejected the exercise, alleging manipulation, intimidation, and falsification of results in parts of the state.

Party members in Bauchi also raised concerns over alleged attempts to impose a candidate, insisting on a credible and competitive process.

Following the disruptions, the APC leadership postponed the Bauchi governorship primary to Friday, while also rescheduling the State House of Assembly primaries for Maradun I and Maradun II constituencies in Zamfara State to Sunday, May 24, 2026.

The decisions were confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, who said the National Working Committee approved the changes after consultations with stakeholders to ensure a transparent and peaceful electoral process.

Hands Off Our Police! Senate Leader Issues Explosive Warning To Shield State Force From Governors And Cabals!.

Published

on

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has emphasized that any proposed state police services must possess guaranteed financial independence to protect them from potential manipulation by governors, political actors, criminal elements, and other powerful interests. Bamidele, who is also the Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, proposed that funding for these services should be placed on a first-line charge as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Key aspects of Bamidele’s proposal and the National Assembly’s approach include:

  • Addressing Stakeholder Concerns: Bamidele acknowledged that fears regarding the potential abuse of state police by influential individuals are legitimate and well-founded, noting that these concerns are partially rooted in Nigeria’s experience with regional police control during the First Republic.

  • Multi-layered Safeguards: The National Assembly is working to develop a system of checks and safeguards designed to ensure professional discipline, institutional independence, and financial autonomy.

  • Judiciary-Style Funding: To prevent police chiefs from being subject to the “whims and caprices” of state governors, Bamidele suggested a funding model similar to that of the judiciary, which is protected under the Constitution and does not require routine executive approval.

  • Constitutional Guarantees: Bamidele stated that the 1999 Constitution should provide guaranteed funding sources for both State Commissioners of Police and State Police Service Commissions.

  • Continued Engagement: The National Assembly intends to maintain stakeholder engagement throughout the constitutional amendment process required to establish state police services across the country.
