The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has dismissed coalition groups opposing the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections, saying they lack electoral credibility and achievements.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Reports indicate that Basiru made the remarks during an interview on ARISE Television, where he described the emerging coalitions as political distractions rather than viable alternatives.

He maintained that any politician serious about winning elections must align with the APC, which he described as the country’s most dominant political structure.

According to him, apart from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the APC remains the only party with proven success in national elections.

Basiru stated that many of the groups calling themselves coalitions have not demonstrated real electoral strength, insisting they are yet to convince Nigerians of their viability.

He said, “Aside from the PDP, APC remains the strongest political machinery for winning elections in Nigeria today.

“Many of the groups calling themselves coalitions are yet to prove themselves as credible electoral forces, and for now, they appear more like political distractions than serious alternatives.”

He also referenced the formation of the APC in 2013 through a merger of major opposition parties, which later led to the party’s historic victory in 2015 when Muhammadu Buhari defeated then-incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

The APC was formed through the alliance of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), and All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), which came together on a reform and change agenda.

News reports that Kwankwaso made the remarks during an interview on Premier Radio over the weekend.

The former Kano State governor said securing the position would be a major step toward positioning Kano State for the presidency in the future.

According to him, “By God’s grace, the next election will be unlike anything that has ever happened in our state and country, especially if I secure the ticket and my name is on the ballot.”

He lamented that Kano has never produced a vice president since the First Republic, describing the situation as disappointing, but expressed confidence that it would change.

“Kano State will rightfully secure this position, which will open the door for our state to eventually produce the president of this country,” he said.

Kwankwaso also urged political actors in the North-West to be strategic ahead of the elections, warning that poor decisions could have long-term consequences.

He added that some southerners were already aligning with his party, stressing the need for the North-West to act wisely in its political choices.

Lawal described Elliot’s leadership style as sincere, transparent, and impactful, saying his performance has benefited the constituency.

He noted that although he once lost the party ticket to Elliot, the decision has since been justified by the lawmaker’s track record.

“People say the ticket was taken from Kabiru Lawal for Desmond, and at that time Kabiru was doing quite well. It is true, but there was a reason for it,” he said.

“But today, I say boldly that Desmond, who came into office then, has performed better than Kabiru Lawal.”

The former lawmaker urged party leaders to support Elliot for another term, arguing that Surulere would gain more from his continued representation.

He added that replacing Elliot at this point would not serve the constituency’s interest.

“Barakat is already in the cabinet. Let her remain there and allow Desmond to go for one more term, after which it can end,” he said.

A message found on the building wall, reading “Say No to automatic ticket,” was also interpreted as a warning.
