“Why Herdsmen Can’t Leave Banditry” – Gumi Sparks Fresh Debate.

Published

Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has said that herdsmen involved in banditry may struggle to survive if they abandon criminal activities, claiming it is currently their main source of funding.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

News reports that Gumi made the statement during an interview on AIT, where he discussed the topic “Ending Insecurity: Amnesty and Negotiation with Bandits.”

He argued that many herdsmen have faced long-standing hardship and neglect, adding that successive governments have failed to adequately address their living conditions or modernise their livelihoods.

According to him, no meaningful budgetary provision has been directed towards herdsmen.

“Not one kobo of our Nigerian budget goes to them,” Gumi said.

He further stated that bandits are not living in luxury, claiming that some survive under very harsh conditions, including drinking from streams.

Gumi added that abandoning banditry would cut off their means of sustaining what he described as their “war operations.”

“If they leave banditry, they won’t have a source of financing for their war machine,” he said.

“We are under pressure to fight the government. The government that has helicopters is bombarding us. So remove the pressure, the need for the money is there.”

Meanwhile, Gumi also cautioned against United States involvement in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, warning that such intervention could worsen the country’s security challenges.

In a Facebook post on Monday, he urged Nigeria not to compromise its sovereignty in the name of seeking foreign military assistance against banditry, Boko Haram, and other security threats.

He described Nigeria’s sovereignty as “a red line” and maintained that the Nigerian military has the capacity to handle the situation if guided by fairness, transparency, and proper rules of engagement.

Gumi further argued that foreign military intervention, particularly by the US, could turn Nigeria into a new hotspot for global terrorist activity, potentially increasing violence and insecurity across the country.

Reports indicate that the election was organised to determine the party’s candidate for the senatorial district ahead of the upcoming general elections.

According to the results announced after the exercise, Daura polled the highest number of votes, defeating Kabir to clinch the APC ticket for the Daura zone.

His emergence means he will now represent the ruling party as its senatorial candidate in the forthcoming election.

The immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has emerged victorious in the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary for Kogi Central ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Reports indicate that the primary election, held on Monday, featured two other aspirants contesting the party’s ticket.

Bello defeated the APC Diaspora Secretary, Momoh Obaro, and Ibrahim Yakubu Adoke to secure the party’s nomination for the senatorial district.

His victory comes after days of tension and speculation within political circles over his clearance to participate in the exercise.

The former governor’s political future had been the subject of debate following concerns over his screening process and eligibility to contest the primaries.

Earlier reports suggested that Bello did not appear before the APC screening panel, raising questions about his participation in the race.

However, the APC National Assembly Screening Committee later cleared him alongside other aspirants, allowing him to contest in the senatorial primaries across Kogi State.

The development followed earlier uncertainty within party ranks, with reports indicating that 17 senatorial aspirants were cleared across the state’s three senatorial districts.

The controversy surrounding his participation was further heightened by his ongoing legal issues with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Despite the initial speculation, Bello was eventually placed on the ballot and went on to secure victory over his opponents.

His emergence now positions him as the APC candidate for the Kogi Central Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections.

The seat is expected to be highly competitive, given Bello’s influence as a former two-term governor and the political weight of the district.

Bello, who served as governor of Kogi State from 2016 to 2024, now prepares for a new political battle as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.
