Ogun Senator Unveils Digital Governance Bill, Pushes For Modernised Nigerian Government.
Senator representing Ogun Central, Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, has called for urgent reforms of Nigeria’s legal and governance frameworks, insisting that they must be updated to reflect the realities of the global digital economy.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Salisu, who chairs the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, made the remarks at the closing ceremony of a two-week digital skills training programme held in Abeokuta for youths across the senatorial district.
The training, organised in partnership with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, equipped about 350 participants with skills in cybersecurity, content creation, and other digital competencies.
Speaking at the event held at the JAMB office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the senator stressed that the future of employment and governance lies in technology adoption and digital literacy.
He noted that countries and individuals that fail to embrace ICT skills risk being left behind in the fast-evolving global economy.
According to him, “any citizen now that does not have ICT skills is impaired in what they can do,” adding that digital competence has become essential for survival in today’s world.
Salisu explained that participants underwent one week of virtual training and another week of practical, hands-on sessions, after which they were provided with laptops to support continued learning.
He emphasised that the programme was designed to ensure beneficiaries were properly trained before receiving equipment, rather than simply distributing devices.
The senator also spoke on the proposed National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill currently before the National Assembly, describing it as a key legislative priority and a potential legacy project for his tenure.
He noted that the bill seeks to modernise governance by creating a regulated framework for electronic transactions and ensuring that government institutions operate digitally.
Salisu further explained that the legislation would require ministries, departments, and agencies to adopt digital systems, while also introducing a national digital exchange platform to enable seamless data sharing across government institutions.
He expressed confidence that the bill would be passed and signed into law before the National Assembly proceeds on recess later in the year.
On electronic voting and Nigeria’s broader digital advancement, the senator said the country has already made notable progress in technology deployment, citing systems used by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), which have attracted interest from other African countries.
He added that ongoing broadband expansion projects by the federal government would further strengthen digital infrastructure and pave the way for wider adoption of electronic governance and voting systems in the future.
