What The Death Of ISIS Commander Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki Means For Terror Networks Worldwide.

Published

on

The reported killing of Abu-Bilal al-Manuki, a senior Islamic State commander widely regarded as the group’s second-in-command globally, by joint United States and Nigerian forces could mark one of the most significant counterterrorism breakthroughs in the Lake Chad conflict in recent years.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Beyond the removal of a high-ranking extremist leader, the operation points to a broader shift in the ongoing fight against Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and other jihadist networks operating across Nigeria and the wider Sahel region.

According to a statement attributed to Donald Trump, the strike was executed by U.S. forces in coordination with the Nigerian military following what he described as a “carefully planned and highly complex mission.”

The operation highlights an unusual level of intelligence sharing, surveillance capability, and operational coordination between Nigeria and the United States in counterterrorism efforts.

However, analysts suggest the significance of the mission goes far beyond the elimination of a single commander, as al-Manuki was believed to play a central role in ISWAP’s evolving military strategy.

The Figure Behind ISWAP’s Tactical Evolution In West Africa

Security and intelligence sources familiar with insurgent operations in the Lake Chad Basin say al-Manuki was among foreign fighters deployed to strengthen ISWAP’s operational capacity in the region.

These fighters, reportedly with combat experience from other jihadist theatres, are believed to have contributed to a shift in insurgent tactics across North-East Nigeria.

Their arrival coincided with a noticeable change in ISWAP operations, including coordinated night raids, mobile attack formations, the use of drones for reconnaissance and attacks, increased deployment of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), renewed suicide bombing tactics, and improved battlefield communication systems.

Previously, insurgent attacks in the region were largely localised and predictable. Over time, however, ISWAP began adopting more complex strategies similar to those used by ISIS in Iraq and Syria, particularly surprise night operations targeting isolated military positions.

The introduction of drone usage, though still limited in capability, marked a concerning evolution in the group’s operational sophistication.

Al-Manuki was believed to be a key figure in driving this transformation, with alleged responsibilities extending beyond battlefield command to include coordination of funding channels, recruitment support, propaganda structures, and strategic links between ISIS central leadership and ISWAP factions in West Africa.

Why The Operation Matters

The killing of such a high-profile figure carries several strategic implications.

First, it disrupts ISWAP’s command and coordination structure. Beyond frontline fighters, the group relies heavily on leadership networks responsible for logistics, financing, recruitment, and strategic planning. Removing a key coordinator can lead to confusion and temporary disruption within the organisation.

Second, the operation suggests a significant intelligence breakthrough. ISWAP has long benefited from difficult terrain across the Lake Chad islands, Sambisa Forest, and wider Sahel corridor, which has helped shield its leadership. Successfully locating and targeting a figure of al-Manuki’s profile points to deeper intelligence penetration than previously acknowledged.

President Trump’s reference to intelligence “sources” monitoring the commander’s movements may also heighten suspicion within insurgent ranks, potentially triggering internal mistrust and fear of infiltration.

Third, the strike reflects growing global concern about the expansion of ISIS-linked activities in West Africa. The Sahel has increasingly become a major hub for jihadist activity amid instability in countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, prompting international attention beyond regional security concerns.

Not A Decisive End To ISWAP

Despite the significance of the operation, experts caution that it does not signal the defeat of ISWAP.

The group has historically demonstrated resilience following leadership losses, surviving military offensives, internal splits, and sustained counterterrorism pressure.

Its continued survival is often linked to underlying structural challenges in the region, including poverty, unemployment, displacement, weak border controls, and limited state presence in remote communities.

As long as these conditions persist, extremist groups are likely to retain recruitment and operational capacity.

However, the loss of a strategically important figure like al-Manuki may slow ISWAP’s tactical innovation and temporarily weaken its coordination abilities.

Psychological And Strategic Impact

Perhaps the most immediate impact is psychological. For ISWAP leadership, the operation sends a clear message that even senior commanders are vulnerable to targeted strikes.

For Nigerian troops, it represents a morale boost and evidence that sustained pressure is producing results. For civilians in the North-East, it offers cautious optimism that extremist influence may be gradually weakening.

For Nigeria’s wider counterterrorism strategy, the operation could signal a shift toward more intelligence-driven precision targeting of high-value militant figures rather than broad military engagements.

Whether this translates into long-term success will depend on sustained intelligence operations, regional cooperation, and post-conflict stabilization efforts.

Ultimately, the death of Abu-Bilal al-Manuki may either stand as a symbolic victory or become the beginning of a deeper strategic weakening of ISWAP in the Lake Chad Basin,

Sowore made his position known in a statement shared on his official X handle.

He alleged that some Nigerian celebrities are increasingly involving law enforcement authorities in matters arising from online exchanges, criticism, and social media commentary.

According to him, the growing tendency to criminalise speech, jokes, trolling, and general online banter poses a serious threat to freedom of expression and democratic values in the country.

Sowore stated that this trend is dangerous and incompatible with the principles of free speech.

He also criticised the Nigeria Police Force and parts of the justice system, accusing some influential individuals of using law enforcement agencies to intimidate ordinary citizens over online disagreements.

He further insisted that the police should not act as private enforcers for wealthy or powerful individuals, warning against the abuse of state institutions for personal disputes.

Security Tension: Fulani Group Demands Tougher Action On Cattle Rustlers, Bandit Attacks.

Published

The Plateau State chapter of the Coalition of Fulani Registered Organizations has urged Governor Caleb Mutfwang to broaden his recent shoot-on-sight directive, which targets individuals destroying farmlands, to also include cattle rustlers and those attacking Fulani herdsmen.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The coalition, an umbrella body of Fulani pastoralist and socio-cultural groups in the state, made the appeal in a statement issued on Saturday and signed by its Chairman, Hon. Garba Abdullahi Muhammad.

It argued that for the governor to be seen as fair and just, the same order should apply to those who steal cattle or assault herders carrying out their legitimate activities.

While commending Mutfwang for his swift response to renewed farmer-herder clashes in Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and Bokkos LGAs, the group expressed concern that the directive could be misused by overzealous security personnel or ethnic militias to target innocent Fulani herdsmen.

Muhammad stated that although the coalition appreciates the governor’s peace efforts, it strongly believes the order should be expanded to ensure balance and fairness in enforcement.

He warned that without such balance, the directive could be interpreted as one-sided, potentially escalating tensions rather than resolving them.

The coalition also raised concerns over alleged killings of herders, cattle rustling, poisoning of grazing areas and water sources, as well as the destruction of livestock in some communities across the state.

It called on the government to extend the directive to cover these incidents, insisting that cattle rustling, cattle poisoning, and attacks on herders should be treated with the same level of urgency.

The group stressed that lasting peace in Plateau State can only be achieved through fairness, dialogue, accountability, and mutual respect between farmers and herders.

Makinde gave the assurance during the inauguration of the Oyo State Police Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and its Oversight Committee, held at the Police Command headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan.

He described the initiative as the first of its kind in the South-West region, noting that it reflects a shared commitment between government and security agencies to enhance public safety.

The governor commended the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as well as security operatives in the state for their efforts in maintaining relative peace and stability in Oyo.

He expressed confidence that the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit would play a key role in tackling violent crime and strengthening peace, security, and stability not only in Oyo State but across the country.

Makinde further pledged that his administration would continue to provide the necessary resources and institutional backing required for security agencies to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

Oriire Abduction

Reacting to the recent abduction incident in Oriire Local Government Area, Makinde extended condolences to families affected by the attack.

He described the incident as a painful reminder of the need for continuous vigilance and proactive security measures.

The governor said the state government is working closely with security agencies to investigate the incident and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

He also urged community leaders and residents to remain alert and report suspicious activities promptly to the appropriate authorities.

Makinde reassured residents that his administration remains fully committed to collaborating with security agencies to curb criminal activities and enhance safety across the state.

Police Command Statement

In his welcome remarks, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, described the establishment of the VCRU as a significant policing reform aimed at improving security operations.

He said the unit was created to boost public trust, improve professionalism, and strengthen tactical responses in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police.

Olugbenga explained that the unit replaces previous tactical formations with a more accountable, intelligence-driven, professionally trained, and human rights–compliant structure designed to respond swiftly to violent crime and emerging threats.

He added that officers assigned to the unit were carefully selected from various divisions based on discipline, experience, competence, and integrity.

The police commissioner also praised the state government for its consistent support, saying it has continued to motivate security agencies and strengthen operational efficiency.

Stakeholders’ Reactions

In separate goodwill messages, the Coordinator of the Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative, Mogaji Nurudeen Akinade, and the Oyo State Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission, Abayomi Ogundele, described the initiative as a major step toward improving public safety.

They said the launch reflects the Nigeria Police Force’s renewed commitment to protecting lives and property.

Both stakeholders commended the Oyo State Government for building a stronger security framework aimed at reducing crime and improving collaboration among security agencies.
