Tobi Amusan Clinches Third African Title As Nigeria Dominates In Ghana.

World record holder Tobi Amusan stormed to her third African women’s 100m hurdles title at the 24th African Athletics Championships in Ghana on Wednesday, May 13.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Competing in her fourth appearance at the championships, Amusan dominated the final from start to finish, leading from the gun to the tape. Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller finished second, while Nigeria’s Adaobi Tabugbo secured bronze, earning her first individual international medal.

The win adds to Amusan’s previous triumphs in 2018 on home soil and in 2022 in Mauritius. She did not compete in the hurdles event at the 2024 edition in Cameroon but returned in emphatic style this year.

However, the official time for the race had not been released at the time of reporting due to technical challenges affecting the championships. The event has been criticised for a faulty timing system, missing live results, incomplete wind readings, and inconsistent disqualifications.

Despite the disruptions, Amusan had earlier posted the fastest times in both the heats and semi-finals before sealing victory in the final.

Speaking after the race, she expressed gratitude and satisfaction with the result.

“First, I will say all thanks to God. I don’t know what the time is, but I got the win, that’s all that matters, and I’m looking forward to the next race,” she said.

She added that the competition served as her season opener and a stepping stone for upcoming events.

“The goal is to get racing, and this is my season opener. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season,” Amusan said.

Elsewhere, Nigeria missed out on additional gold medals in both the men’s and women’s 100m finals later in the evening.

Former African youth champion Rosemary Chukwuma claimed silver in the women’s race behind Cameroon’s Kole Etame, while Liberia’s Thelma Davies took bronze. Nigeria’s Miracle Ezechukwu also competed in the final.

In the men’s 100m, Chidera Ezeakor secured bronze as Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme completed a sprint double with gold. South Africa’s Nkoana Bradley finished second, while Ghana’s Abdul-Raheed Saminu and Joseph Amoah missed out on medals, much to the disappointment of the home crowd.

Nigeria now sits on six medals at the championships—one gold, two silver, and three bronze—with the competition set to conclude on Sunday, May 17.

The team began its campaign on Tuesday with two medals in the women’s discus event, as Divine Oladipo won silver in her debut for Nigeria after switching allegiance from Great Britain, while Obiageri Amaechi secured bronze.

  • Mohammed Goje, the Secretary to the Yobe State Government, stated that all students abducted from the Government Girls’ Science and Technical College in Dapchi in 2018 have been freed, with the exception of Leah Sharibu.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

    • Goje noted that the other abducted girls were rescued prior to the start of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration in 2019, making the incident a matter of the past for the current state government.

    • Leah Sharibu was one of 110 girls kidnapped by insurgents in February 2018; while most of her classmates were released a month later, she was reportedly kept in captivity due to her refusal to renounce her Christian faith.

    • Despite ongoing government assurances, Sharibu remains the only student from the group still in captivity more than eight years after the abduction.

    • Regarding the state’s security, Goje claimed that the Buni administration has made significant progress since 2019, making all local government areas in Yobe accessible to both citizens and humanitarian aid.

    • This improvement in safety has enabled many displaced residents to return to their communities, where the government has focused on rebuilding infrastructure and providing support in healthcare, education, and agriculture.

    • Furthermore, Yobe has become the first state in Nigeria to implement the National Internally Displaced Persons Policy, providing residents with the flexibility to decide whether to return to their ancestral homes or relocate elsewhere while receiving continued government support.
