Ben Murray-Bruce Reveals How 1983 Coup Crushed His Business Empire.

Founder of Silverbird Group, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, has said that the 1983 military coup which removed President Shehu Shagari from office had a devastating impact on his early concert promotion business.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on Wednesday at the Infrastructure Dialogue 2026 in Abuja, Murray-Bruce explained that the political upheaval ultimately led to the collapse of his growing entertainment venture.

He recounted that he started the business between 1980 and 1983 with a ₦20,000 loan obtained from his siblings, at a time when Nigeria’s entertainment industry was still underdeveloped, with limited media platforms and infrastructure.

According to him, the situation changed abruptly after the 1983 military takeover, which disrupted economic and business activities across the country and brought his operations to a halt.

“By 1983, the military overthrew the government of Shehu Shagari. Once Shagari was overthrown, all hell broke loose. In those days, when a coup d’état occurred, the first thing they did was to cut off your phone. That was how they ruined my concert business,” he said.

He further explained that the instability that followed the coup worsened business conditions, as rising costs and foreign exchange difficulties made concert promotion increasingly unsustainable.

Murray-Bruce noted that ticket prices, which initially ranged between ₦5 and ₦10, later rose to ₦15 and ₦20, but audience numbers still dropped by about 25 percent, leading to significant losses.

He added that the lack of robust media and entertainment platforms at the time—limited to outlets like NTA, FRCN, and a few newspapers—also made promotion difficult, while the scarcity of venues outside the National Theatre in Lagos further constrained the industry.

Despite the setback, he said he successfully organised about 20 concerts during that period, with only one resulting in a loss, before the business eventually collapsed.

Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, has publicly challenged the US-based political advisory and lobbying firm Von Batten-Montague-York to substantiate claims linking President Bola Tinubu to historical drug trafficking. In a Saturday statement shared via his verified X account, Fani-Kayode addressed the 1993 civil forfeiture complaint filed by the US Department of Justice in the Northern District of Illinois, clarifying that the action targeted property rather than serving as a personal criminal conviction or a finding that Tinubu smuggled narcotics.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Emphasizing that being the subject of an investigation does not equate to an indictment, prosecution, or conviction, Fani-Kayode demanded that the firm produce explicit evidence and pinpoint where the US government or the DEA formally alleged that the President personally smuggled heroin. He reiterated that the 1993 filings and subsequent 2026 FBI declarations reflect a civil settlement over funds rather than proof of personal involvement, ultimately challenging the firm to back up its sweeping claims regarding institutional corruption.
