News reports that Wike made the remarks on Wednesday while inspecting ongoing road projects within the FCT.

The former Rivers State Governor said many Nigerians resist paying taxes but still expect high-quality public infrastructure.

He said, “I’m not trying to defend AMAC when it comes to the issue of tax. Nigerians don’t like to pay tax but they can call you all sorts of names when it has to do with taxes.

“However, nobody has given us such a report. If we have such a report, we will call AMAC to order because there must be a civilized way to collect taxes.

“But knowing what we experienced too about payment of taxes, it would be difficult for me to say that they are right.

“Nigerians want good infrastructure but don’t want to pay tax. They want everything free in this country.”

Meanwhile, Wike also addressed criticism of his recent visit to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, stressing that he does not see political opponents as enemies.

He explained that the visit was purely personal and not politically motivated, contrary to public speculation.

According to him, political differences should not prevent individuals from maintaining cordial relationships, especially when such relationships predate their current political positions.
