Fresh indications emerged on Tuesday that the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, may have dropped his governorship ambition and opted instead to seek re-election into the National Assembly.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Multiple sources who spoke with Punch suggested that Kalu is now preparing to contest another term as the representative of Bende Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

One of the signs pointing to this development is his reported appearance before the All Progressives Congress (APC) screening committee in Abuja on Sunday, a move seen as an indication of his interest in retaining his seat in the Green Chamber.

The shift comes weeks after some political stakeholders purchased the APC governorship expression of interest and nomination forms on his behalf, urging him to join the race for the Abia State governorship seat.

When the forms were presented earlier in Abuja, the spokesperson of the group, James Uko-Kalu (SAN), described the Deputy Speaker as a capable bridge-builder whose performance in the National Assembly made him fit for higher responsibility.

Kalu, in response at the time, said he would consult widely before taking a final decision.

“The purchase of this form is clearly a call for me to step forward. I have received it with gratitude, and within the next one or two days, after due consultations, I will make my position known,” he said.

A close ally of the Deputy Speaker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Kalu is leaning toward returning to the House of Representatives.

According to the source, “It is true that he is coming back to the House, subject to scaling the primaries and winning the election. He indeed spoke about becoming a governor, but in politics, things don’t always go as planned.

“He has consulted widely, and there is a strong belief that his supporters want him to continue his work in parliament.”

Kalu had earlier been speculated as a major contender against Governor Alex Otti in the upcoming Abia governorship election.
