Under the new guidelines, all newly admitted secondary school students will undergo drug screening at the point of entry. The initiative forms part of a broader national strategy to tackle substance abuse and improve safety, discipline, and learning conditions in schools.

The policy is being implemented under the National Guidelines for the Prevention of Drug and Substance Use in Schools, overseen by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.

According to the document, schools are expected to provide a safe learning environment that protects students’ mental health and academic performance by reducing exposure to drug-related risks.

In addition to admission screening, periodic drug tests will also be conducted during the school year for both new and returning students. Students are prohibited from possessing or using controlled substances unless officially authorised by school authorities.

Students who require prescribed medication must declare it during admission through their parents or guardians.

The guidelines also set out a structured response for students who test positive. First-time offenders are to receive counselling and initial treatment within the school system.

If a student tests positive again, the case will be escalated to medical professionals for further intervention. Continued positive results after repeated support may lead to temporary removal from the school environment for rehabilitation.

Counselling is required before and after testing, with students being guided beforehand to reduce anxiety and supported afterward to help them cope with results and receive appropriate care.

Schools are also expected to establish disciplinary committees to handle drug-related cases, while any violent behaviour linked to substance abuse is to be reported to law enforcement authorities.

Students who refuse treatment or rehabilitation may also be temporarily withdrawn from school until they are deemed fit to return.
