The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has sealed an automobile assembly plant involved in the production of heavy-duty and passenger vehicles for allegedly burning waste within its premises.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The company, Carry Heavy Industry Limited (CHIL), located in Moloko-Asipa near Abeokuta, was shut down for violating Section 2b(a) of the OGWAMA law, which prohibits individuals and industries from burning waste.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Waste Management, Farouk Akintunde, who confirmed the development on Sunday, said the agency had no choice but to close the facility after repeated warnings to its management to engage government-approved Private Sector Participants (PSP) for proper waste disposal instead of burning.

He explained that the company’s actions resulted in air pollution from toxic emissions, posing health risks to workers and nearby residents.

Akintunde, who also serves as the Managing Director of OGWAMA, stressed that such practices are unacceptable to the state government, which prioritises the health and wellbeing of its citizens.

He added that the facility will remain shut until it complies with environmental regulations by registering with approved waste PSP operators or risks further legal sanctions.

Meanwhile, the agency also issued a warning and imposed sanctions on Camellin Industry Limited, located along the Sagamu Interchange on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, for a similar offence.

According to Akintunde, the company was found guilty of illegal waste burning, which endangers both employees and the surrounding environment, and its management has been summoned for further action.
