reports that security sources, as quoted by Zagazola Makama, said the incident occurred around 3 p.m. on May 7 in Mier village.

Troops from Sector 8 of Operation Enduring Peace, stationed at the Fier forward post, had organised the dialogue as part of efforts to ease rising tensions between farming communities and Fulani herders in the area.

The meeting was aimed at addressing recurring issues such as cattle rustling, reprisal attacks, and communal distrust in parts of Plateau State.

According to sources, the discussion was initially calm before some aggrieved youths reportedly became hostile and moved to seize the rifles of two soldiers deployed to provide security.

“The situation suddenly turned violent when some youths moved aggressively toward the troops and attempted to disarm two soldiers,” a security source said.

During the ensuing struggle, one of the soldiers reportedly fired a shot in self-defence to prevent being overpowered.

One civilian sustained fatal injuries and was confirmed dead, while four others and one soldier were also injured in the incident.

The injured victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, and the deceased was deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Pankshin.

Reinforcement troops were later deployed to the area to restore order and prevent further escalation, while efforts were made to calm tensions within the community.

Security sources also confirmed that four youths allegedly involved in the attack on the soldiers were arrested.

The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in Plateau State, where troops under Operation Enduring Peace continue peacebuilding engagements, patrols, and intelligence operations aimed at curbing communal violence, banditry, and cattle rustling.

Military authorities and community leaders have repeatedly urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions.
