NLC Urges South African Unions To Protect Migrants Amid Rising Xenophobia.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for urgent action to curb rising xenophobic violence against African migrants in South Africa, urging the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) to roll out a widespread awareness campaign to safeguard migrant workers.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a letter dated May 7, 2026, and sent to COSATU leadership in Johannesburg, NLC President Joe Ajaero condemned recent killings of African migrants and the destruction of their businesses.

He attributed the attacks to worsening economic hardship and weak policy responses, warning that African workers must not be pitted against one another.

Ajaero said it was unacceptable for members of the working class to be treated as targets of violence, stressing that labour solidarity must be preserved.

He urged COSATU to intensify sensitisation efforts within communities, unions, and workplaces to counter narratives that blame migrants for unemployment and economic struggles. He also called for efforts to dismantle the belief that Africans from different countries are enemies because of colonial borders.

The NLC criticised what it described as the poor response of South African security agencies, accusing authorities of failing to adequately protect migrants and their businesses.

It demanded the full deployment of security personnel to prevent further attacks, as well as the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. The congress also called on the South African government to compensate victims and affected families.

According to the NLC, xenophobia undermines labour unity across Africa and weakens collective bargaining power.

Ajaero stressed that divisions within the working class ultimately benefit capital at the expense of workers, warning that such tensions must be addressed urgently.

The congress also proposed an emergency meeting of African labour bodies under the African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation and the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity to develop coordinated protections for migrant workers.

He further warned that failure to decisively confront xenophobic violence could encourage its spread to other parts of the continent, describing it as a dangerous threat that must be eliminated before it escalates further.

Deregistration Drama: Courtroom Showdown Over ADC And Accord Party Hits A New Delay!.

Published

  • Case Adjournment: The Court of Appeal in Abuja has postponed the hearing of an appeal regarding the potential deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Party, and three other political parties until July 7.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

    • Procedural Delay: The court moved the hearing date from June 25 to allow the involved parties sufficient time to file and exchange their briefs of argument.

    • Reasoning for New Date: Although Accord Party counsel, Musibau Adetunbi (SAN), requested a three-day window to file, Justice Abubakar Mohammed explained that the panel’s upcoming official commitments necessitated selecting July 7 as the earliest available date.

    • Background of the Dispute: The appeal follows a Federal High Court ruling by Justice Peter Lifu, which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the ADC, Accord Party, Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) for allegedly failing to meet constitutional performance benchmarks.

    • INEC’s Position: INEC has challenged this deregistration order, arguing that these parties met the necessary constitutional thresholds by securing elective positions in previous elections and providing certificates of return as evidence.

    • Stay of Execution: On June 16, the Court of Appeal previously ordered a stay of execution on the Federal High Court’s judgment, preventing INEC from proceeding with the deregistration until the current appeal is decided.

    • Procedural Criticism: The appellate court had previously criticized Justice Lifu for ignoring an earlier order to suspend proceedings, noting that such an action undermined the established hierarchy of the courts.

    • Origin of the Suit: The original legal challenge was filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators, who argued that these specific parties failed to meet the electoral performance standards required by the 1999 Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act.
