Kebbi Residents Cry Out As Prolonged Blackout Cripples Businesses.

Published

on

Power outages across parts of Kebbi State have dragged on for months, plunging communities into prolonged darkness, disrupting businesses, worsening living conditions, and deepening economic hardship in the affected areas.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

reports that residents in several local government areas say the situation has moved beyond occasional interruptions, describing it as a continuous blackout that has paralysed homes, shops, and small-scale enterprises.

News gathered that the recurring electricity failure has become one of the state’s most serious challenges, with many communities experiencing little or no power supply for weeks at a time.

Small business owners say they are bearing the brunt of the crisis, especially those who rely on electricity for refrigeration, cold storage, and daily operations.

A frozen food seller in Badariya, Musa Abdullahi, said the prolonged blackout has forced him into repeated losses as he struggles to preserve perishable goods.

“I cannot afford a solar system that can carry my fridge and other appliances. I am losing customers every day because I have no way to preserve my goods,” he said.

Another trader in the Kara area of Birnin Kebbi said business turnover has dropped sharply due to poor electricity supply and rising generator fuel costs.

“Business has dropped seriously. Without light, customers don’t come like before. Even buying fuel for the generator is too expensive for small traders like us,” she said.

The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO), which supplies power to Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara and Kaduna States, remains the main operator responsible for electricity distribution in the state.

However, the company has faced sustained criticism over frequent load shedding, unstable supply, and inadequate power allocation to Kebbi communities.

KAEDCO has previously attributed the poor electricity supply to low national grid allocation, transmission constraints, and revenue challenges, which it says continue to affect distribution across its franchise areas.

To address the situation, the Kebbi State Government in April constituted a multi-stakeholder committee to engage KAEDCO over the persistent power challenges.

The committee was tasked with reviewing electricity supply levels, payment records, billing compliance, and operational bottlenecks affecting distribution in the state.

However, DAILY POST gathered that the committee has yet to submit its report, despite a two-week deadline set by the government from April 16, 2026.

The delay has left residents uncertain about any immediate resolution to the crisis.

Reacting to the worsening situation, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Yahaya Sarki, called for urgent intervention from the electricity company.

“KEDCO, wake up! People have been in darkness for days, this is unacceptable. Please act now. Your culture of silence is unbearable,” he said.

The comment has triggered widespread reactions, with residents across affected communities sharing similar complaints about prolonged blackout.

In Kawara community, residents said they have been without electricity for months due to a faulty transformer, with no repair in sight.

Many also lamented that alternative power solutions like solar systems remain unaffordable for most households.

Findings suggest that the ongoing blackout is linked to poor infrastructure maintenance and long-standing neglect in the power sector.

Several parts of Birnin Kebbi, including GRA and Kara feeders, are also affected, with residents reporting unstable or completely absent supply.

Communities along the Gesse to Rugga axis are said to have experienced over a month of continuous blackout, further worsening living conditions.

Meanwhile, the state government had earlier suspended its monthly N150 million support to the electricity distribution company, citing poor service delivery and ongoing complaints from residents.

2027: Fubara, Wike Peace Deal Head For Collapse, Impeachment Threat May Return.

Published

on

The peace arrangement between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, appears to be under serious strain as the 2027 general elections approach.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Both politicians are once again at odds over who will succeed Fubara as governor of Rivers State, raising concerns that the earlier reconciliation may be collapsing.

The tension is tied to a peace deal reportedly brokered by President Bola Tinubu, which included an understanding that Fubara would not seek re-election in 2027 and would instead join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Fubara had earlier defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in December, a move widely interpreted as an attempt to ease pressure from impeachment threats in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

However, fresh political controversy erupted on Tuesday after a group of elders led by Hon. Awaji Inombek Abiante, a House of Representatives member and ally of the governor, purchased governorship nomination forms on Fubara’s behalf. The development triggered speculation that the governor may be reconsidering earlier political understandings, with critics accusing him of backing out of the alleged agreement with Wike.

In a counter development, allies of Wike also entered the race. Dax George-Kelly, a former Commissioner for Works, and Hon. Kingsley Chinda, a member of the House of Representatives, obtained governorship forms as well. George-Kelly is contesting under the APC, while Chinda is expected to run on the PDP platform.

The contest also features Architect Tonye Patrick Cole of the APC, a known associate of former Minister of Transportation and African Democratic Congress (ADC) figure Rotimi Amaechi. Cole, who previously contested and lost the governorship elections in 2019 and 2023, has declared that he will not step down for any candidate.

Although Cole is considered a less dominant figure politically in the state, George-Kelly and Chinda are seen as more formidable due to their ties to Wike’s political structure. George-Kelly shares the riverine geopolitical base with Fubara, potentially dividing APC support, while Chinda comes from the Ikwerre ethnic group, the same as Wike, and is currently the only openly declared PDP aspirant.

Reports also indicate that Fubara may have endorsed 32 aspirants for seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly. These candidates, believed to be his loyalists, are said to be contesting across various constituencies under the leadership of former Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo.

A former chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Chijioke Ihunwo, an ally of the governor, is also reportedly preparing to challenge the current Speaker, Martin Amaewhule.

One supporter of the governor claimed that Fubara has mobilised backing for 32 assembly candidates loyal to his camp.

Amid these developments, there are fears that the political crisis could escalate again in the House of Assembly, with lawmakers aligned to Wike allegedly considering renewed impeachment moves when legislative activities resume. They are reportedly citing constitutional concerns relating to budget processes, spending approvals, and the structure of the state executive council.

Despite the growing tension, some political analysts believe Fubara may still have strong backing within the APC. They point to the influence of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who chairs the APC screening committee, as well as support from other APC governors.

There are also reports that some governors are urging President Tinubu to intervene and caution Wike to prevent further destabilisation of the APC in Rivers State.

Wike, during a tour of local government areas in January, had vowed not to repeat what he described as the mistake of supporting a “disloyal” candidate in the 2027 governorship race. Although he has not publicly named his preferred successor, he has made it clear that he intends to play a decisive role in determining who emerges governor.

The Imo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) have jointly dismissed reports claiming that pensioners in the state were instructed to submit their personal documents to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government for the processing of gratuity payments.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement signed by NLC State Chairperson Uche Chigemezu Nwigwe and NUP State Chairman J.B. Ugochukwu, the unions described the information as false, misleading, and aimed at defrauding unsuspecting members of the public.

They stressed that the alleged directive did not originate from either of the two labour bodies and should be disregarded entirely.

The unions noted that ongoing negotiations with the state government over the payment of the next batch of gratuities were still in progress, adding that Governor Hope Uzodinma remains committed to fulfilling his promise on payments.

Pensioners were urged to ignore the fake reports and avoid engaging with fraudsters or unauthorized persons requesting money or personal details in connection with gratuity claims.

They further advised pensioners to rely only on official channels by visiting or contacting the NUP office or NLC secretariat for accurate updates.

The labour leadership reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare and interests of pensioners and workers in the state at all times.
