2027: Fubara, Wike Peace Deal Head For Collapse, Impeachment Threat May Return.

The peace arrangement between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, appears to be under serious strain as the 2027 general elections approach.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Both politicians are once again at odds over who will succeed Fubara as governor of Rivers State, raising concerns that the earlier reconciliation may be collapsing.

The tension is tied to a peace deal reportedly brokered by President Bola Tinubu, which included an understanding that Fubara would not seek re-election in 2027 and would instead join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Fubara had earlier defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in December, a move widely interpreted as an attempt to ease pressure from impeachment threats in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

However, fresh political controversy erupted on Tuesday after a group of elders led by Hon. Awaji Inombek Abiante, a House of Representatives member and ally of the governor, purchased governorship nomination forms on Fubara’s behalf. The development triggered speculation that the governor may be reconsidering earlier political understandings, with critics accusing him of backing out of the alleged agreement with Wike.

In a counter development, allies of Wike also entered the race. Dax George-Kelly, a former Commissioner for Works, and Hon. Kingsley Chinda, a member of the House of Representatives, obtained governorship forms as well. George-Kelly is contesting under the APC, while Chinda is expected to run on the PDP platform.

The contest also features Architect Tonye Patrick Cole of the APC, a known associate of former Minister of Transportation and African Democratic Congress (ADC) figure Rotimi Amaechi. Cole, who previously contested and lost the governorship elections in 2019 and 2023, has declared that he will not step down for any candidate.

Although Cole is considered a less dominant figure politically in the state, George-Kelly and Chinda are seen as more formidable due to their ties to Wike’s political structure. George-Kelly shares the riverine geopolitical base with Fubara, potentially dividing APC support, while Chinda comes from the Ikwerre ethnic group, the same as Wike, and is currently the only openly declared PDP aspirant.

Reports also indicate that Fubara may have endorsed 32 aspirants for seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly. These candidates, believed to be his loyalists, are said to be contesting across various constituencies under the leadership of former Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo.

A former chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Chijioke Ihunwo, an ally of the governor, is also reportedly preparing to challenge the current Speaker, Martin Amaewhule.

One supporter of the governor claimed that Fubara has mobilised backing for 32 assembly candidates loyal to his camp.

Amid these developments, there are fears that the political crisis could escalate again in the House of Assembly, with lawmakers aligned to Wike allegedly considering renewed impeachment moves when legislative activities resume. They are reportedly citing constitutional concerns relating to budget processes, spending approvals, and the structure of the state executive council.

Despite the growing tension, some political analysts believe Fubara may still have strong backing within the APC. They point to the influence of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who chairs the APC screening committee, as well as support from other APC governors.

There are also reports that some governors are urging President Tinubu to intervene and caution Wike to prevent further destabilisation of the APC in Rivers State.

Wike, during a tour of local government areas in January, had vowed not to repeat what he described as the mistake of supporting a “disloyal” candidate in the 2027 governorship race. Although he has not publicly named his preferred successor, he has made it clear that he intends to play a decisive role in determining who emerges governor.

The closed-door meeting also served as a reunion between two long-time collaborators in public service. During Jonathan’s time as Vice President, Hayatu-Deen served on the National Council on Privatization and chaired the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE). He later also participated in the Presidential Advisory Committee during Jonathan’s administration, first as Acting President and subsequently as President. Both men have since maintained a strong mutual respect stemming from their years of working together.

According to a statement released by the Mohammed Hayatu-Deen Media Office, the ADC aspirant used the visit to formally notify Jonathan of his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the party’s platform.

Jonathan, in turn, reportedly welcomed him warmly and wished him well in his political ambitions.

The statement further noted that Hayatu-Deen, who has over four decades of experience across the public and private sectors, intends to leverage his background if elected president. The Imo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) have jointly dismissed reports claiming that pensioners in the state were instructed to submit their personal documents to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government for the processing of gratuity payments.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement signed by NLC State Chairperson Uche Chigemezu Nwigwe and NUP State Chairman J.B. Ugochukwu, the unions described the information as false, misleading, and aimed at defrauding unsuspecting members of the public.

They stressed that the alleged directive did not originate from either of the two labour bodies and should be disregarded entirely.

The unions noted that ongoing negotiations with the state government over the payment of the next batch of gratuities were still in progress, adding that Governor Hope Uzodinma remains committed to fulfilling his promise on payments.

Pensioners were urged to ignore the fake reports and avoid engaging with fraudsters or unauthorized persons requesting money or personal details in connection with gratuity claims.

They further advised pensioners to rely only on official channels by visiting or contacting the NUP office or NLC secretariat for accurate updates.

The labour leadership reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare and interests of pensioners and workers in the state at all times.

NLC Urges South African Unions To Protect Migrants Amid Rising Xenophobia.

Published

on

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for urgent action to curb rising xenophobic violence against African migrants in South Africa, urging the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) to roll out a widespread awareness campaign to safeguard migrant workers.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a letter dated May 7, 2026, and sent to COSATU leadership in Johannesburg, NLC President Joe Ajaero condemned recent killings of African migrants and the destruction of their businesses.

He attributed the attacks to worsening economic hardship and weak policy responses, warning that African workers must not be pitted against one another.

Ajaero said it was unacceptable for members of the working class to be treated as targets of violence, stressing that labour solidarity must be preserved.

He urged COSATU to intensify sensitisation efforts within communities, unions, and workplaces to counter narratives that blame migrants for unemployment and economic struggles. He also called for efforts to dismantle the belief that Africans from different countries are enemies because of colonial borders.

The NLC criticised what it described as the poor response of South African security agencies, accusing authorities of failing to adequately protect migrants and their businesses.

It demanded the full deployment of security personnel to prevent further attacks, as well as the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. The congress also called on the South African government to compensate victims and affected families.

According to the NLC, xenophobia undermines labour unity across Africa and weakens collective bargaining power.

Ajaero stressed that divisions within the working class ultimately benefit capital at the expense of workers, warning that such tensions must be addressed urgently.

The congress also proposed an emergency meeting of African labour bodies under the African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation and the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity to develop coordinated protections for migrant workers.

He further warned that failure to decisively confront xenophobic violence could encourage its spread to other parts of the continent, describing it as a dangerous threat that must be eliminated before it escalates further.
