Jonathan’s 2027 Dream Under Fire As Court Takes Up Disqualification Suit.

Published

on

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday over a legal challenge seeking to prevent him from contesting the 2027 presidential election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2102/2025, was filed by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, who argues that Jonathan is constitutionally barred from seeking the presidency again.

According to the plaintiff, Jonathan has already exhausted the constitutional two-term limit, having first completed the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua after his death in 2010 before securing and serving a full term following the 2011 presidential election.

Justice Peter Lifu had on April 28 directed that hearing notices be served on the defendants after they failed to submit their responses within the stipulated time.

Jonathan is listed as the first defendant in the case, while the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney-General of the Federation are named as second and third defendants.

The plaintiff is asking the court to stop Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a presidential candidate for the 2027 election and also to restrain INEC from accepting or publishing his name.

An affidavit supporting the case, deposed to by Emmanuel Agida, stated that Jonathan became president on May 6, 2010, following Yar’Adua’s death a day earlier.

The affidavit noted that reports suggesting Jonathan may return to contest in 2027 prompted the lawsuit.

It argued that by completing Yar’Adua’s unexpired tenure and later serving a full elected term, Jonathan has already reached the constitutional limit allowed for a Nigerian president.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that Jonathan’s court appearance could also coincide with a possible formal declaration of his 2027 presidential ambition.

Sources claimed the former president may use the opportunity to announce both his intention to run and the political platform he plans to contest under.

Jonathan, who served as president from 2011 to 2015 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), recently hinted at a possible political comeback while addressing youths who urged him to join the race.

“Presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you, and I’ll consult widely. The most important thing is that young Nigerians must have hope,” he said.

The encounter unfolded as follows:

  • The event took an unexpected turn when a junior secondary school student stood up and directly challenged him, asking why he failed to keep his promises.

  • The question immediately shifted the tone of the meeting, causing the audience to fall silent and focus intently on the issue.

  • Rather than dismissing the girl’s complaint, Obi chose to investigate the matter.
