Akpagu said his decision was influenced by ongoing court cases and legal uncertainties currently surrounding the party.

His resignation was contained in a letter dated April 26, 2026, which was made available to journalists on Friday in Calabar, Cross River State.

The letter was addressed to the ADC Chairman of Ipong Ward in Obudu Local Government Area, Pastor Emmanuel Ugar Ugwakong.

According to him, the decision came after consultations with his family, friends, associates, and political supporters.

He wrote: “I write to inform you of my resignation from the African Democratic Congress with immediate effect.

“This decision comes after consultation with family, friends, associates and followers, largely based on the uncertainties arising from the unsettled court cases and legal hurdles placed on the pathway of the ADC.”

Akpagu explained that the unresolved legal matters within the party made his continued membership difficult.

He also appreciated party members for their support during his time in the ADC, expressing gratitude for their understanding.

The resignation letter was duly received and acknowledged by the party.

However, he did not disclose his next political move following his exit from the ADC.

Professor Akpagu served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar between 2015 and 2020 and is a professor of African and Caribbean Literatures in French.
