reports that he made the remarks during his screening before senators on Wednesday, where he outlined his plans for the electricity industry if confirmed as minister. Tegbe acknowledged that electricity remains critical to Nigeria’s economic growth and daily life, but admitted that the sector is still burdened by longstanding challenges, including unstable power supply, poor billing systems, and a lack of trust between consumers and service providers. He said his approach would be focused on gradual but visible progress rather than ambitious promises, stressing that Nigerians should begin to see improvements within a short period. The minister noted that Nigeria still has a significant metering deficit of about 44 per cent, although government interventions have recently led to the distribution of several million meters. He added that further efforts are required to bridge the gap. According to him, priority areas will include strengthening electricity distribution, improving gas supply and power generation, upgrading transmission infrastructure, and ensuring greater transparency and accountability across the sector. Tegbe also explained that frequent grid collapses are the result of deep-rooted structural problems rather than isolated incidents, insisting that comprehensive reforms are needed to address the situation. He further stressed that Nigerians should expect measurable results within months, not years, and pledged to ensure accountability in the sector. The minister warned that some vested interests benefit from the current inefficiencies in the power system, adding that his administration would confront such obstacles while pushing for reforms. He said: “I will not stand here and say tomorrow, I will give you 24 hours electricity. But what I will tell you, and I will be very honest about it, is that I will ensure that visible improvement is seen across the country in the shortest time possible. I will replace uncertainty for Nigerians with clarity, and inefficiency with discipline. “We must reduce system disturbances and strengthen transmission, tariffs must reflect services, and tariffs must justify service, and we must close the trust gap between operators and our citizens. “Grid collapse is not accidental; it reflects deeper structural problems. If there are no results in three months, there will be none in six. Nigerians should hold us accountable. There are elements that do not want the system to work because they benefit from its failure. We will take them on.”
