Stop Poisoning Food, VCDP Cautions Farmers On Excessive Chemical Use.

Published

The Federal Government and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), through the Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) in Niger State, have warned farmers against the excessive use of agrochemicals during crop production and storage, stressing that such practices pose serious health risks to consumers.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The caution was issued during an advocacy campaign in Doko, Lavun Local Government Area, focused on discouraging roadside drying of food products.

Speaking at the event, the state VCDP Business, Marketing and Development Officer, Mrs Elizabeth Yisa, linked several health complications to unsafe food handling methods and improper chemical application.

She expressed concern that despite repeated awareness campaigns, some farmers still fail to follow recommended safety guidelines, leading to harmful consequences for public health.

According to her, rather than applying approved chemical quantities mixed with water, some farmers reportedly use several times the recommended dosage in an attempt to speed up crop growth.

Yisa warned that these chemicals often remain in food products even after processing, while excessive application during storage further increases health risks for consumers.

She also urged cassava processors to ensure garri is properly fried instead of depending on roadside drying, advising that where drying is necessary, it should be done in clean, controlled environments.

She noted that the VCDP continues to train farmers on safe agricultural and food processing practices throughout the value chain.

Also speaking, Nurse Leah Yisa of IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna, warned that consuming food contaminated by excessive chemicals or dried in unhygienic conditions could lead to severe illnesses, including cancers such as leukemia and lung cancer.

She said prolonged exposure to harmful substances in food can gradually accumulate in the body and trigger serious health complications.

Religious leaders from both Christian and Muslim communities, including Pastor David G. and Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, who attended the programme, pledged to spread the awareness message to their congregations, educating farmers and consumers on the dangers of roadside drying and chemical misuse.

Some participants, including farmers Mrs Grace and Audu Dazhr, also condemned the practice of exposing food to dirty environments, warning that it threatens the health of both producers and consumers.

They further called for the reactivation of sanitation teams within local government councils to enforce hygiene standards in food processing areas and promote safer agricultural practices.
