The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has announced sweeping reforms within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), introducing the establishment and nationwide rollout of Violent Crime Response Units.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

reports that the new units are set to replace the existing Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams across the country.

Disu made the announcement on Tuesday during an emergency meeting with Commissioners of Police and senior officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

He explained that the Violent Crime Response Units (VCRUs) will operate in all 36 state commands and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to him, the new units—evolved from the former Special Anti-Robbery Squad structure—will now function under the direct supervision of state Commissioners of Police, who will be fully accountable for their operations and outcomes.

The IGP noted that personnel deployed to the VCRUs have undergone rigorous training in tactical response, intelligence gathering, human rights compliance, and operational rules of engagement.

He stressed that the units will only act on verified intelligence and will not be deployed arbitrarily.

Disu also stated that civilian oversight mechanisms will be integrated into the units’ operations to enhance transparency and accountability.

He further condemned the recent extrajudicial killing of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State, describing it as unlawful and unacceptable. He confirmed that the officer involved, along with members of his team, had been dismissed, and the matter has been referred to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for further legal action.

“The Nigeria Police Force under my leadership has zero tolerance for extra-judicial actions. Accountability will be pursued to its logical conclusion,” he said.

IGP Orders Arms Audit And Strengthens Community Policing

On community policing, Disu directed Commissioners of Police to intensify engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to strengthen trust and improve intelligence sharing.

He also instructed that contact details of commissioners be made accessible to community leaders to improve communication and rapid response.

As part of broader reforms, the IGP ordered an immediate and comprehensive audit of arms and ammunition across all police formations, describing it as essential for accountability, prevention of misuse, and operational efficiency.

He highlighted recent operational successes, noting that in April 2026 alone, the Force arrested 28 suspected terrorists, 85 kidnapping suspects, 51 murder suspects, 62 armed robbery suspects, and 54 individuals linked to cult activities.

He added that 189 kidnapped victims were rescued nationwide within the same period.

According to him, police operations also led to the recovery of 140 assorted firearms, 1,074 rounds of ammunition, and 37 stolen vehicles.

Disu urged officers to maintain professionalism and integrity, reaffirming the Force’s commitment to restoring public confidence and improving national security.

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger has issued an apology to teammate Álvaro Carreras following a reported altercation in the dressing room after the club’s 1-1 draw with Real Betis.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to reports, the incident occurred at the training ground two weeks ago, where Rudiger allegedly lost his temper and had to be separated from Carreras.

Carreras has since acknowledged that there was a disagreement but downplayed its seriousness, insisting the issue has already been resolved internally within the squad.

He said the situation was an isolated case and stressed that his relationship with all his teammates remains strong and unaffected.

The left-back, who returned to Real Madrid last summer from Benfica in a deal worth around €50 million, has recently been the subject of speculation regarding tensions in the dressing room.

Meanwhile, Spanish media reports suggest Rudiger has taken steps to mend relations, including organising a team dinner with players and their families last Friday.

The episode comes amid a challenging period for the club. Former coach Xabi Alonso reportedly left in January following internal unrest, while his successor Álvaro Arbeloa is expected to depart at the end of the season.

Off-field attention has also turned to Kylian Mbappé, who travelled to Sardinia while recovering from a hamstring injury sustained against Betis. Real Madrid went on to secure a 2-0 win over Espanyol during his absence.

Mbappé was later spotted on a yacht with actress Ester Expósito, drawing criticism ahead of Sunday’s El Clásico against Barcelona at Camp Nou, where Barcelona need just a point to clinch the league title.

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, shut down Balmoral Convention Centre in Victoria Island for allegedly discharging raw sewage into a public drainage system.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to a statement from the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the enforcement followed reports that the facility was pumping untreated waste into drains, alongside wastewater spillages from a blocked sewage chamber. The situation reportedly caused a foul smell and environmental nuisance in the area.

The statement confirmed that the centre was sealed after investigations showed improper wastewater management practices that violated environmental regulations.

In a separate operation, officials also sealed Foodies Restaurant at No. 32B Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, Eti-Osa, for releasing untreated wastewater into public drains.

Authorities said the restaurant’s waste contained heavy deposits of oil and fat, which blocked drainage channels, leading to pollution, offensive odour, and disruption of the environment, despite prior warnings.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its warning to residents and business operators to adhere strictly to approved wastewater disposal guidelines.

It added that any individual or organisation found violating environmental laws would face sanctions, including possible prosecution, in line with existing regulations.
