Cunha opened the scoring at Old Trafford as United defeated Liverpool 3-2, securing qualification for the UEFA Champions League with three games still remaining.

The achievement marks a significant turnaround, as earlier in the season a top-four finish appeared uncertain despite assurances from football director Jason Wilcox that qualification for Europe’s elite competition remained the target following Ruben Amorim’s January departure.

Carrick has impressed since taking charge, winning 10 of his 14 matches, and is now regarded as the frontrunner for the job on a permanent basis. The 44-year-old was a key member of Ferguson’s successful squad, winning multiple Premier League titles and the Champions League during his playing career.

Speaking highly of the interim boss, Cunha said, “I sat on the bench with him. How he teaches everyone is amazing. He has the magic of those Ferguson times and brings it into the team. He shows us how things were done so we can be part of it. It’s incredible. He deserves it.”

Despite sealing Champions League qualification, Carrick has cautioned his squad against complacency, insisting standards must remain high. United still require four more points to secure a top-three finish, which would be only their fifth since Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. They are also on course to finish within 12 points of the league champions, their closest margin in recent years.

Cunha stressed the importance of Champions League football to the club’s identity, saying, “Playing in the Champions League is one of the biggest privileges at this club. United without the Champions League is not the same, and the Champions League without United is not the same either. But we must also fight for trophies. This is just the first step.”

Looking ahead to the summer, major squad changes are expected at Old Trafford, with Casemiro widely tipped to leave. Although Carrick has suggested the midfielder will depart, Cunha admitted uncertainty over his future.

“He’s an amazing person, very important both on and off the pitch. Everyone hopes he stays a bit longer, but we’ll see what happens with his contract,” Cunha said.

Since joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £62.5 million last summer, Cunha has scored nine goals and delivered several crucial performances, including match-winning contributions against Arsenal and Chelsea.
