The meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to a statement by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the engagement is intended to address issues that could potentially strain diplomatic relations between both countries.

The ministry confirmed that the invitation was formally extended to the South African envoy ahead of the discussions.

It explained that the meeting aims to express Nigeria’s strong concerns over recent developments affecting the longstanding cordial relationship between Nigeria and South Africa.

Key discussions will focus on ongoing protests in South Africa and alleged cases of harassment and attacks on Nigerian citizens and their businesses.

The ministry also noted growing unease among Nigerians over the situation but urged citizens to remain calm.

It reassured the public that the Federal Government remains committed to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Nigerians living in South Africa.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that xenophobic protests have intensified in parts of South Africa, including Pretoria, where foreign nationals have allegedly faced harassment and violence.

Some incidents reportedly include attempts to force foreign children out of schools, while the unrest has also led to reported deaths, including two Nigerians, heightening concerns within the diaspora community.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for adherence to the country’s laws while reaffirming his government’s commitment to protecting human rights.
