Akpabio Urges Igbo Youths: “Avoid Armed Struggle Against Nigeria”

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has appealed to the people of the South East to uphold peace and discourage their youths from engaging in armed confrontation against the Federal Government.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He made the call during the funeral of Sir Albert Ikechukwu Nnamani, a former Administrative Secretary of the defunct Oil Mineral Producing Area Development Commission (OMPADEC), held in Ikem, Enugu State.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Akpabio stressed that meaningful development can only take place in a peaceful environment and urged Ndigbo to properly guide and mentor the younger generation.

“For Ndigbo, I plead with you to continue to maintain peace and closely monitor the youth of today. Many of them do not understand politics or development. Development can only thrive where there is peace.

“Any attempt to wrest power or assert independence through armed struggle against the Federal Government will not succeed. State power will always be stronger,” he said.

Akpabio also assured that the National Assembly is willing to support fairness for the South East through legislation.

“We are ready as a parliament to enact the right laws and make necessary adjustments so that Ndigbo can, at the very least, have an additional state and be equal with other geopolitical zones. That is our commitment,” he added.

He further stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is working to address historical imbalances, including in federal appointments.

“The President has done his best to ensure that Ndigbo are not marginalised. However, everything must be achieved through dialogue and negotiation,” he said.

According to him, peaceful engagement remains the most effective path for securing fairness within the country.

“I say this to emphasise that through peaceful means and negotiation, we will achieve our rightful place in Nigeria. I want this to happen within our lifetime. We must not lose our youths to bad politics or poor guidance,” he said.

Akpabio also expressed concern over the economic impact of sit-at-home orders in the South East, particularly in Onitsha, noting that it has severely affected trade and livelihoods.

“Ndigbo are known for enterprise. After the civil war, accounts were frozen and people were given little compensation. That history still lingers,” he said.

He added that while some post-war efforts focused on reconciliation and rehabilitation in parts of the South East and South-South, reconstruction was largely neglected.

He concluded by expressing hope for justice, praying that fairness for Ndigbo would be achieved within his lifetime.

Paying tribute to the late Sir Nnamani, Akpabio described him as a disciplined and dignified public servant who contributed significantly to the development of the Niger Delta region during his time at OMPADEC.

He noted that in earlier times, communities in the region grew frustrated over unfulfilled government promises, but said such tensions have now become a thing of the past.

The police described the circulating report as false, unverified, and capable of causing unnecessary panic among the public.

Earlier, the state government, in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, had alleged that B-Red narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at Oke-Fia in Osogbo on Wednesday.

However, responding to inquiries, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, dismissed the claim and clarified what actually transpired.

He stated that the command received a complaint on April 30, 2026, at about 4:30 p.m. from Adebayo David Adeleke.

According to him, the complainant reported being trailed by a group of individuals on motorcycles while driving through the Olaiya–Alekuwodo axis of Osogbo.

Ojelabi said the individuals were allegedly seen pointing at his vehicle while chanting that he was “the Governor’s son.”

He further explained that after passing a traffic light, a white Toyota Venza without a registration number, along with unidentified motorcyclists, continued to follow him.

“The complainant stated that he and his associates later left the area safely and proceeded to the Government House, Oke-Fia, Osogbo,” he said.

The police spokesman added that the complainant confirmed he was neither attacked nor physically harmed during the incident.

He also disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for proper investigation.

Ojelabi reiterated that the report being circulated is false, unverified, and capable of creating unnecessary tension in the state.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has intensified its political expansion ahead of the 2027 general elections, as prominent politicians from different parts of the country officially defected to the party during a large reception held in Abuja.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The event, which attracted a strong turnout, was led by the party’s National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, and members of the National Working Committee. They described the growing influx of new members as evidence of rising confidence in the NDC nationwide.

Among those who joined the party were Comrade Babatunde Alli, former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP); Prof. Mohammed Sani Yahaya, the NNPP governorship candidate in Taraba State during the 2023 elections; and Hon. Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma, a former House of Representatives member and ex-board member of the Code of Conduct Bureau. They were accompanied by thousands of supporters and political associates.

A key highlight of the event was the formal presentation of membership cards to the new entrants, marking their official integration into the party structure.

Senator Dickson, while welcoming them, said their decision reflected growing belief in the NDC’s vision for national renewal, inclusive leadership, and good governance.

Senator Cleopas urged the new members to remain committed to the party’s ideals and work within its framework to strengthen unity and broaden its national reach.

Speaking at the event, Comrade Babatunde F. Alli said his exit from the PRP followed careful reflection on internal party issues, stressing the need for inclusivity, youth participation, and fairness in political organisations.

He said the emergence of the NDC had renewed his confidence in a more principled and people-focused political system.

Prof. Mohammed Sani Yahaya, former NNPP governorship candidate in Taraba State, declared full grassroots support for the NDC, saying the party’s structure aligns with their political direction from polling unit to state level, and expressing confidence in its prospects ahead of 2027.

Similarly, Hon. Agbonayinma criticised the current state of the nation, describing Nigeria as struggling with governance challenges, while praising the NDC as a platform capable of restoring hope and rebuilding public trust.

He argued that despite the country’s vast potential, poor leadership and corruption have hindered progress, adding that the NDC offers a path toward national renewal.
