Jonathan Steps Into Diezani Case, Tells UK Court Jets Were Used For Official Duties.

A statement attributed to former President Goodluck Jonathan has been presented at the Southwark Crown Court in the United Kingdom as part of the ongoing trial involving former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to BBC reports, the statement was tendered in court on Tuesday during proceedings in the case.

In the submission, Jonathan stated that it was not uncommon for third parties to cover expenses on behalf of ministers during official foreign assignments.

He explained that any legitimate incidental or in-kind support provided by third parties would be properly documented and later reimbursed where necessary.

The former president also confirmed that he authorised Alison-Madueke’s use of private jets for certain official international engagements.

Alison-Madueke, who served as Minister of Petroleum Resources between 2010 and 2015, is standing trial alongside Olatimbo Ayinde and Doye Agama on five counts of allegedly receiving bribes. All defendants have pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors have accused the former minister of accepting luxury items and access to high-value properties from individuals allegedly seeking influence over oil sector contracts.

They claim the benefits were offered in exchange for preferential treatment within the petroleum industry.

However, Alison-Madueke’s lawyer, Jonathan Laidlaw, told the court that she did not have direct control over oil contract awards during her tenure.

In related testimony, Nigerian businessman Igho Sanomi and Ghanaian businessman Kevin Okyere denied any wrongdoing.

Both men said in statements read in court that expenses incurred on behalf of the former minister were later refunded.

Okyere stated that he paid about £3,900 for items purchased in 2014, adding that the amount was subsequently returned in cash.

Sanomi also maintained that he was reimbursed for purchases made on behalf of Alison-Madueke and insisted his business dealings were conducted through legitimate competitive processes.

The trial is ongoing as the court continues to review evidence and hear witness accounts.
