reports that the appointment was announced on Thursday in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The President also approved the restructuring of the Office of the Special Adviser (Energy), which has now been redesignated as Special Adviser (Oil & Gas), in a move aimed at clarifying responsibilities and eliminating overlaps within the energy governance framework.

Mr. Babalola, a former Minister of Power, is regarded as a seasoned expert in the sector with extensive knowledge of the structural and operational challenges affecting Nigeria’s electricity value chain.

According to the statement, his appointment reflects the President’s commitment to a firm and results-oriented overhaul of the power sector.

It noted that the Presidential Task Force he will lead is designed as a high-level, delivery-driven body operating under direct presidential authority to restore discipline, improve efficiency, and ensure commercial sustainability in the electricity industry, while enhancing coordination across relevant government institutions.

The Task Force is mandated to drive a full system reset of the power sector, implement a “Performance Before Expansion” approach, and reduce technical, commercial, and collection losses.

It will also focus on strengthening cost discipline and tariff compliance, improving revenue assurance and liquidity, restoring grid stability and market integrity, and encouraging productive use of electricity across key sectors.

Other responsibilities include developing Electricity Growth Zones, reducing fiscal risks to government, and delivering a 90-day action plan for immediate reforms.

The President expects Mr. Babalola to bring urgency, strict discipline, and strong execution capacity to the assignment in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda, with the goal of achieving measurable improvements in power supply and overall sector performance.

The operation was orchestrated by Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 2 Division, Nigerian Army, based in Ibadan.

  • Nnebeife, who assumed command of the 2 Division on August 19, 2025, has made troop welfare and operational effectiveness key priorities during his tenure.

  • Beyond his GOC role, he serves as the Force Commander of Operation FANSAN YAMA Sector 3, a formation dedicated to combating terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry.

  • Prior to this mission, Nnebeife successfully supervised a rescue operation in Kwara State’s Babasango Forest that secured the freedom of two kidnap victims.

A Multilateral Security Effort

The rescue was a highly coordinated effort that utilized a diverse array of tactical and intelligence assets to track the abductors and dismantle their logistics network.

  • Participating military and government agencies included the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), the National Counter Terrorism Centre, the Defence Headquarters, the Nigerian Navy, the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

  • The operation also integrated personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Amotekun Corps, and local hunters and vigilantes who provided essential knowledge of the terrain.

  • Tactical units deployed for the mission included the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service, Defence Headquarters Special Operations Forces, Nigerian Army Special Operations Forces—including snipers—the Police Intelligence Response Team, and the DSS Special Tactical and Anti-Terrorism Team.

  • The Nigerian Air Force provided critical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance support to monitor terrorist hideouts, while ground forces applied sustained pressure that ultimately forced the unconditional release of the captives.
