A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled May 5 for the hearing of a suit asking the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and several other political parties over alleged constitutional violations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

News reports that Justice Peter Lifu fixed the date on Monday after approving an application allowing the plaintiff to amend its originating summons to include additional parties accused of breaching constitutional provisions.

The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/25, was instituted by the Incorporated Trustees of the National Forum of Former Legislators.

The group is seeking a court order directing INEC to deregister the ADC, Accord Party, Zenith Labour Party, and Action Alliance.

Also joined in the suit are INEC, the Attorney-General of the Federation, and the affected political parties.

In his ruling, Justice Lifu ordered all parties yet to respond to the amended filings to do so promptly, noting that the matter is urgent and of public importance.

He stressed that with political party primaries for the 2027 general elections approaching, the case requires swift determination.

The court directed all parties to file their processes on or before May 1 and adjourned proceedings to May 5 for a definite hearing.

Among the reliefs sought, the plaintiffs are asking the court to declare that INEC has a constitutional duty to enforce conditions for political party registration and continued participation in elections.

They are also requesting an order compelling INEC to deregister the affected parties, as well as an injunction preventing the commission from recognising or dealing with them until they comply with legal requirements.

In an affidavit submitted by Igbokwe Nnanna, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and National Coordinator of the group, the plaintiffs accused INEC of failing to properly enforce constitutional provisions.

They alleged that the parties in question have not won any elective positions at federal, state, or local government levels since their registration.

The group further claimed the parties failed to meet the required vote threshold in presidential elections and lack widespread representation across the country.

Despite these alleged shortcomings, the plaintiffs argued that INEC continues to recognise them, describing the situation as unconstitutional and inconsistent with the Electoral Act 2022.

They warned that allowing the parties to participate in the 2027 elections could overload the electoral process, strain resources, and mislead voters.

The forum maintained that the continued existence of such parties undermines electoral integrity and wastes public funds, urging the court to compel INEC to enforce full compliance with constitutional standards.

According to reports, the governor stated this in a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju.

Makinde was reacting to concerns over the proposed use of the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for its presidential campaign rally.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to visit Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on November 21 for the APC rally scheduled to hold at Mapo Hall.

The planned event comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the proposed venue attracting public attention.

Addressing the issue, Makinde maintained that public facilities belong to the people of Oyo State and should be managed transparently and fairly, without political bias.

According to him, “public assets belong to the people of Oyo State and must be administered in a manner that is transparent, equitable, and devoid of partisan considerations.”

The governor stressed that his administration remains committed to ensuring a level playing field for all political stakeholders, irrespective of their party affiliations. He added that democracy thrives when political parties have equal opportunities to engage with voters within the confines of the law.

Makinde further explained that access to government-owned facilities is subject to established procedures and regulations designed to ensure proper use, maintenance and public order.

He stated that any political party or organisation that meets the stipulated requirements should not be subjected to discrimination or unfair restrictions when seeking to use such facilities.

The governor also urged political actors to conduct their activities peacefully and responsibly. He called on relevant authorities to handle requests for public facilities professionally, fairly and without prejudice.

The statement reaffirmed the Oyo State Government’s commitment to promoting political tolerance, safeguarding democratic freedoms and creating an environment where legitimate political activities can take place in accordance with the law.
