Civil War: Nigeria wouldn’t Have won without Niger Republic – Obasanjo.

Speaking on the ‘Soni Irabor Live’ programme on News Central, Obasanjo explained that Nigeria relied on Niger Republic to supply and transport materials to troops during the conflict.

The Nigerian Civil War lasted from July 6, 1967, to January 15, 1970.

Obasanjo also expressed concern over Nigeria’s recent diplomatic stance toward Niger Republic following the 2023 military coup that removed President Mohamed Bazoum.

He criticised the decision to cut off electricity supply to Niger after the takeover, despite what he described as Niger’s historical contribution to the development of the Kainji Dam.

The former military leader said Nigeria’s regional influence has declined over the years, adding that the country no longer plays a strong role in shaping events across Africa.

Recalling Nigeria’s past foreign policy, he noted that the country supported liberation struggles in Angola and South Africa during military rule, including financial assistance to Angola in the 1970s.

He questioned Nigeria’s current diplomatic influence, stating that the country appears less involved in key regional and continental decisions.

Obasanjo further referenced the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), saying the bloc has been poorly managed in recent times despite decades of effort to build it.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s historical relationship with Niger Republic, noting strong cultural and economic ties between both countries.

According to him, despite Niger’s importance during the civil war and in regional cooperation, Nigeria’s response to the coup was swift border closure and power cuts, which he implied was counterproductive.

Obasanjo, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1976 to 1979 and later as civilian president from 1999 to 2007, made the remarks while reflecting on Nigeria’s past and present foreign relations.
