Political Realignment Brewing As Kwankwaso Seeks Northern Support For Obi.

Former Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last election, and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso have intensified moves to secure a joint presidential ticket under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Party insiders revealed that the pair are advocating a one-term presidency arrangement as part of efforts to win the backing of northern stakeholders.

Sources indicated that the proposal is designed to convince the North to support a southern presidency in 2027, with Obi expected to serve only one term if the plan materialises.

The ongoing consultations are also believed to be aimed at weakening support for Atiku Abubakar ahead of the party’s primaries.

Several sources confirmed that the Obi–Kwankwaso alliance has been holding talks with influential figures to strengthen its foothold within the party and across the North.

Investigations showed that Kwankwaso’s camp has stepped up outreach in recent weeks, engaging traditional rulers and key stakeholders.

According to insiders, the campaign team has been urging northern leaders to embrace power rotation, warning that supporting another northern candidate could jeopardise the region’s future political advantage.

Momentum for the joint ticket began building even before Kwankwaso officially joined the ADC on March 30, 2026.

On April 20, supporters of both politicians launched the Obi–Kwankwaso Movement to rally support ahead of the party primaries.

A source within the ADC disclosed that the alliance is already gaining acceptance among northern leaders.

The official, who spoke anonymously, added that some northern stakeholders have begun shifting allegiance to Kwankwaso, dropping earlier plans to support Atiku.

He stated, “Our position is based on fairness — the South should be allowed to complete its eight-year tenure. The North had its eight years before power shifted to Bola Ahmed Tinubu. While there are concerns about Tinubu’s administration, that should not deny the South its full term.

“What we are pushing for is the election of another southerner in 2027, which is why we are backing Obi, who has committed to serving only one term.

“We have been engaging northern leaders to accept this arrangement and support him. Kwankwaso is actively leading these efforts, and some northern leaders have already shown strong support.

“A joint committee set up by Obi and Kwankwaso is also working to formalise and publicly affirm the one-term agreement. Kwankwaso is promoting this commitment in the North, but more reassurance may still be needed to prove that the agreement will be honoured.

“We want northern stakeholders to be convinced of Obi’s sincerity. However, if he eventually reneges on the agreement after becoming president, there are mechanisms to hold him accountable. The North has the electoral strength to respond. That is why some leaders still prefer Goodluck Jonathan to run, although he has shown little interest in contesting.”

Legal Battle Begins As Detained Colonel Challenges FG In Court Over Coup Plot Claim.

A Nigerian Army officer, Colonel Mohammed Alhassan Ma’aji, has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenging his continued detention since September 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He is asking the court to order his release and also seeking ₦500 million in damages for alleged violations of his fundamental rights.

The suit, filed under the Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure Rules of 2009, names the Attorney General of the Federation, the Chief of Army Staff, the Nigerian Army, and the Chief of Defence Intelligence as respondents. It questions why he has allegedly been held for several months without being charged in court.

Through his lawyer, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), Ma’aji argued that his prolonged detention without trial violates his constitutional rights to liberty and human dignity.

Court filings indicate that he was arrested around September 30, 2025, alongside others over allegations of involvement in a coup plot. Since then, he has reportedly remained in military custody in Abuja.

He further alleged that he has been denied access to his family, legal representatives, and adequate medical care during his detention.

The officer maintained that despite claims that investigations have been concluded, authorities have failed to formally charge him within the time required by law. He based his arguments on provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Among his requests, he is seeking a declaration that his detention is unlawful, an order for his immediate release, or alternatively, a directive compelling authorities to arraign him within seven days.

He is also demanding ₦500 million in compensation for the period he has allegedly spent in custody without trial.

An affidavit submitted by a litigation officer in his legal team stated that he has been completely cut off from communication since his arrest and has not been formally charged.

The court is yet to assign a date for the hearing of the case.
