IBADAN DECLARATION

A communiqué released at the end of the Opposition Political Parties National Summit held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, in Ibadan, Oyo State, outlined the resolutions of participating political parties after extensive deliberations on what they described as serious national challenges and threats to democracy under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The opposition parties said their meeting was driven by the need for urgent collective action to “rescue the nation” and protect the interests of over 200 million Nigerians.

Key resolutions from the summit include:

  1. The parties pledged to resist any attempt by the APC to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, insisting on the protection of multi-party democracy.
  2. Despite alleged attempts by the ruling party to consolidate power around President Bola Tinubu for 2027, the opposition affirmed its decision to participate in all upcoming elections.
  3. They agreed to work towards presenting a single presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, to be jointly endorsed by all participating opposition parties.
  4. The summit called for the removal of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, alleging bias in favour of the ruling APC and expressing lack of confidence in his ability to conduct credible elections.
  5. The National Assembly was urged to urgently review the Electoral Act 2026, particularly provisions considered harmful to electoral integrity and constitutional fairness.
  6. The opposition demanded the release of all detained or harassed political actors facing bailable offences, insisting on their constitutional rights to political participation.
  7. The parties criticised recent INEC guidelines, describing them as restrictive, and called for an extension of the deadline for party primaries to the end of July 2026.
  8. The summit commended Nigerians for their resilience and support for democratic change and opposition unity.
  9. The meeting also expressed appreciation to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and the people of Oyo State for hosting the event.

Former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, has commended President Bola Tinubu for approving ₦68 billion as operational support for the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP), saying the intervention will help improve security in Borno State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Ndume, who represents Borno South, said in a statement on Tuesday that the decision reflects the federal government’s responsiveness to the long-standing complaints of residents affected by persistent electricity shortages.

He argued that restoring stable electricity would also help disrupt what he described as the recruitment pipeline for terrorists by improving economic activity and reducing idle youth involvement in crime.

According to him, reliable power supply would strengthen the informal sector and boost small and medium-scale enterprises, while also supporting military efforts against insurgency, which he said thrives in darkness and poor visibility.

Ndume stated that he joined Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum and other stakeholders in appreciating President Tinubu for what he described as a timely and impactful intervention.

He said the funding for the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant would serve as a lifeline for economic recovery in the state.

“The fund released to the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant is a lifeline that would ultimately engender economic activities, particularly operations of medium and small-scale enterprises (SMEs),” he said.

He added that improved economic conditions would help reduce vulnerability to terrorist recruitment.

Ndume also urged government agencies, security forces, and residents to protect power infrastructure from vandalism or attacks by insurgents.

He called for greater vigilance, stressing that citizens must support security agencies in safeguarding critical facilities.

He further noted that stable electricity would not only boost livelihoods but also contribute to long-term efforts to improve security in the region.
