Visitors from Liberia, Ghana, Cameroon, and Gabon who returned home after spending over a week in Calabar for a religious festival have said that Nigeria’s cost of living is significantly lower than what is obtainable in their respective countries.

The foreign nationals were in Calabar for a weeklong spiritual programme organised by the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, alongside other international participants.

During their stay, many of them not only took part in the religious activities but also explored local markets, shopping malls, and social centres, where they purchased goods for personal use and trade purposes.

A Ghanaian visitor, Jacklyn Asare, said Nigerians may not fully appreciate how relatively affordable life is in the country despite widespread complaints about the economy.

She suggested that Nigeria’s large population may be contributing to pressure on living costs, but maintained that prices remain cheaper compared to Ghana and several other West African nations.

Asare explained that she frequently travels to cities like Lagos, Onitsha, and Aba to buy goods, sometimes even ordering in small quantities from Ghana. She noted that reselling these items in Ghana yields high profit margins due to favourable exchange rates, adding that Nigerian products are widely profitable across the region.

She also pointed out that the Nigerian minimum wage would struggle to purchase even a single major household item in Ghana, while also highlighting that fuel prices in Ghana are significantly higher when converted to naira.

A Liberian visitor, Samuel Ator, supported her claims, stating that he regularly visits Nigeria and purchases goods through his daughters based in Calabar and Lagos, noting that Nigerian products are affordable and widely demanded across West Africa.

Similarly, Cameroonian clergyman Oru Denis, who visits Calabar frequently, said he takes advantage of lower prices in Nigeria to buy goods for resale in Mamfe, Cameroon, describing the business as profitable after currency conversion.

A Gabon-based visitor, Orji Igwe, also said he uses his trips to Nigeria to purchase food items and other locally made products for resale in Gabon, adding that the venture remains rewarding depending on the volume of goods transported.
