The resolution was reached during a Town Hall Meeting held on Wednesday, where community leaders, political figures, women groups, youths, and entrepreneurs gathered to deliberate on governance and development challenges affecting the area.
Leading the discussions, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, Special Adviser to the President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in the handling of funds designated for host communities under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
He particularly expressed concern over the Host Community Development Trust (HCDT) fund, stressing that it was established to drive development in oil-producing areas and must not be mismanaged or diverted.
“We are here to provide a platform for everyone to ask questions, seek answers, and participate in every act of civil and political rights unimpeded,” Eyiboh said.
He further urged stakeholders to remain vigilant to ensure the fund achieves its intended purpose, warning against any form of mismanagement or breach of governance processes. He also called on relevant authorities to investigate alleged irregularities in the administration of the fund, insisting that host communities must fully benefit from their natural resources.
During the meeting, participants also expressed political alignment ahead of 2027, declaring support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Senator Ekong Sampson, and Hon. Okpolupm Etteh.
Former NDDC Managing Director, Sir Bassey Dan Abia Snr., described the gathering as a community-driven initiative aimed at advancing the collective development of Esit Eket, noting that the stakeholders remain aligned with the ruling party in the state and at the national level.
Other contributors, including former Speaker Barr. Bassey Essien and ex-lawmaker Hon. Usoro Akpanusoh, called for broader inclusion and stronger collaboration among stakeholders to address development gaps in the area.
Representatives from the three zones of Esit Eket endorsed the resolutions, while a women’s representative, Mercy Sam, advocated for greater inclusion of women in governance and more visible development projects.
Youth representative, Comrade Bassey Bassey Abia, also pledged the support of young people for the decisions reached, while urging leaders to prioritise the protection of local interests and community resources.
