“Tension Rises In Cross River Over New COVID-19 Outbreak”.

reports that the announcement was made on Tuesday in Calabar by the Commissioner for Health, Henry Ayuk, during a press briefing.
Ayuk disclosed that the index case involves a 53-year-old Chinese national employed by Lafarge in Akamkpa Local Government Area. He explained that the individual arrived in Nigeria on March 17 and later began showing symptoms associated with COVID-19.
According to the commissioner, the patient’s condition worsened while receiving care at a government facility, leading to his transfer to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for advanced treatment.
At the teaching hospital, samples were taken and all necessary protocols observed, after which the infection was confirmed. Ayuk, however, noted that the patient is responding well to treatment.
He stressed that the state’s healthcare system is adequately prepared to manage such cases, urging residents not to panic as surveillance and containment strategies are already in effect.
The commissioner added that authorities ensured proper verification before making the case public, in line with established health guidelines.
Also speaking, the State Epidemiologist, Inyang Ekpenyong, said the emergency response system has been activated, with contact tracing and identification of possible contacts already ongoing.
She revealed that rapid response teams have been deployed to Akamkpa, where the patient works, to monitor the situation closely.
Ekpenyong noted that although the last confirmed case in the state was recorded in 2022, there are indications the infection may have been contracted within Nigeria, given the timeline of symptom development.
She emphasised that while COVID-19 cannot be entirely prevented, its spread can be effectively controlled through prompt and coordinated response efforts.
On her part, the World Health Organisation’s State Coordinator, Yewande Olatunde, reiterated that COVID-19 remains a public health concern and urged continued adherence to preventive measures.

News reports that Davido disclosed this in a post shared on his handle on Tuesday.
Expressing confidence ahead of the election, the singer said he is optimistic about Governor Adeleke’s victory and looks forward to a smooth campaign process.
In his post, he wrote that he had been appointed by the Osun State governor and flag bearer of the Accord Party as Head of Youth Mobilisation for the campaign council, adding that the team is focused on securing a successful re-election bid.
Meanwhile, the Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to allegations made by Governor Adeleke that officials of the party in local government councils diverted funds meant for council operations.
Naija News reports that Adeleke made the claims during a stakeholders’ meeting, where he said his administration had been forced to take over the payment of salaries for local government workers, teachers, health workers, and pensioners for over a year.
He alleged that the situation had slowed down government projects and accused APC-aligned council officials of mismanaging funds meant for local government staff.
However, the APC dismissed the allegations in a statement issued by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, accusing the governor of attempting to influence local government officials and using them for political purposes.

The Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Nigeria, Yousef bin Mohammed Al-Balawi, made the proposal on Tuesday during a visit to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, in Abuja.
Al-Balawi praised both Minister Wike and President Bola Tinubu’s administration for the ongoing development of what he described as a “beautiful green city,” adding that Saudi Arabia is keen to deepen cooperation and share experiences in sustainable urban development.
He also highlighted the importance of strengthening ties between the FCT and Riyadh, as well as other major cities in Saudi Arabia, to encourage knowledge exchange and closer collaboration.
In response, Wike acknowledged the strong diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, noting that the FCT is ready to take advantage of the partnership for mutual benefit.
He expressed optimism about future collaboration, stating that the FCT is open to official visits and engagements with Riyadh and other Saudi cities to explore areas of shared interest.
Wike further described Saudi Arabia as an important country in the Gulf region with a rich history and strong ties to Nigeria, adding that both sides can learn from each other in urban development and governance.
He commended the ambassador for his remarks on the transformation taking place in the FCT, attributing the progress to the political will of President Tinubu.
According to him, the current administration is committed to turning the capital city into a modern, globally competitive metropolis, even though ongoing efforts are still underway.

News reports that Okowa made the remarks on Tuesday while speaking at a meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Oshimili South Local Government Area. The gathering is part of ongoing consultations linked to his 2027 Senate ambition.
Okowa said that contrary to Nwoko’s position, people of Delta North actually support the creation of Anioma State within the South-South geopolitical zone, with Asaba as its capital, rather than aligning it with the South-East.
He criticised Nwoko’s approach, describing the push as misleading and poorly thought out, while recalling the role of an Asaba indigene who fought for the city to become the capital of Delta State.
According to him, the current agitation for Anioma State has been handled in a unilateral manner, without proper consultation with the wider population.
Okowa stressed that such a major political demand should not be driven by individual interests, insisting that collective agreement is necessary.
He argued that leaders must remain connected to their people and consider majority opinion, warning against decisions taken without broad consultation.
He also noted that the process of creating new states is not currently at a critical stage in the legislative timetable, suggesting that the agitation at this time may be misplaced.
Okowa maintained that the push for Anioma State should remain a collective aspiration, adding that when the time eventually comes, it should reflect the genuine will of the people of the area.
