The Commissioner of Police in the state, Adekimi Ojo, made the disclosure on Monday in Ilorin while briefing journalists on the incident.

He explained that the monarch of Olayinka community was abducted on Saturday evening by about 10 armed men who stormed his palace shortly after a group of miners had visited him earlier in the day.

According to him, the attackers forcefully broke into the palace, gained access to the monarch’s room, and whisked him away after demanding the money earlier presented to him by the miners.

“The armed men broke into the palace, brought him out from one of the rooms, and demanded the money the miners had given him earlier,” Ojo said.

He added that the monarch handed over the money but was still taken away along with his brother.

The police commissioner said security operatives immediately launched a response operation upon receiving the report, deploying drones and other resources to track the suspects, which led to the arrest of 42 illegal miners in the area.

He, however, noted that it is still unclear whether the actual abductors are among those arrested, adding that investigations are ongoing. All suspects are currently being held at the state police headquarters in Ilorin.

Ojo also revealed that the monarch’s brother later escaped after becoming exhausted during the ordeal. He reportedly told his abductors he could no longer continue and, at one point, asked them to end his life due to fatigue.

Instead, the kidnappers allegedly tied him to a tree and left him behind while they continued with the monarch.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the abductors have demanded a ransom of ₦400 million for the release of the traditional ruler, raising tension in the community.

The Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Abdulrasheed Yusuf, confirmed the incident, describing it as deeply unfortunate and assuring that security agencies are working to secure the monarch’s safe return.

He said combined efforts involving police operatives, forest guards, and local vigilantes have been intensified in surrounding forests to locate and rescue the victim.

Yusuf also urged residents to remain calm and support security agencies with useful information, stressing that efforts are ongoing to restore peace and ensure the monarch’s safe return.
