Official records published on April 8, 2026, by the U.S. Department of State under “Ambassadorial Assignments Overseas” reveal that Nigeria is among 117 countries without a Senate-confirmed U.S. ambassador.

The vacancies span continents including Africa, Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania, affecting both key allies and strategically important regions.

Across Africa, numerous countries are impacted, while in Europe, nations such as Germany, Norway, and Ukraine are also without confirmed U.S. envoys. Similar gaps exist across Asia and the Middle East, as well as in several countries in the Americas and island nations in Oceania.

Data also shows that the U.S. diplomatic post in Nigeria is currently being overseen by a chargé d’affaires rather than a confirmed ambassador.

The situation follows earlier diplomatic changes in December 2025, when nearly 30 career diplomats were recalled from ambassadorial and senior embassy roles worldwide, leaving several missions without permanent leadership.

Analysts say the widespread vacancies could impact U.S. diplomatic engagement and influence across key regions if not addressed promptly.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.
