Only North May Vote For Atiku On Election Day – Amaechi.

Published

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may only enjoy support for his 2027 presidential ambition from the northern region.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Amaechi made the remark during an interview on Friday while reacting to Atiku’s recent comments, where he suggested he has not been fairly represented in Nigeria’s leadership structure.

According to him, if Atiku is basing his qualification to contest the 2027 presidency solely on his northern identity, then his support base may also be limited to that region.

He cautioned against the use of regional and ethnic sentiments in politics, stressing that leadership should be determined by broader and more important considerations.

“If Atiku Abubakar is saying that the only qualification he has is because he is from the north, then it means that on election day, the North will vote for him and the South will not vote for him. That is what it means,” Amaechi said.

“For me, it does not matter whether you are from the North or South. There are other factors that play important roles.”

Meanwhile, Amaechi also described all presidential aspirants under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as regional candidates, noting that figures such as Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and himself are all seeking the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.

Speaking ahead of the party’s primary election, he maintained in an interview with Channels Television that he is the only aspirant not driven by regional interests.

He argued that Nigeria’s continued reliance on ethnicity and religion in choosing leaders has contributed to the country’s challenges, citing the controversy around President Bola Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“It is within the right of the former vice president to say he wants to run, nobody is stopping him. But he has to also understand that there are other factors beyond where he comes from,” he said.

“They are all regional candidates, but I am not a regional candidate. I’m not running because I’m Igbo, even though I’m partially one.

“I have said to Nigerians, leave region and ethnicity alone. That’s what put us here. Those who supported President Tinubu were pursuing a religious agenda. They were so happy about the Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“Today, they have discovered that the market does not know Muslims or Christians. The market only understands naira and kobo, no other language.”

Abdulkarim further stated that ADC members should consider supporting a joint ticket between Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, pointing to their strong grassroots followership.

He said: “Atiku will be 80 years old next year. We don’t want to defeat him… we know he is not going to win, so we are giving him a soft landing to withdraw from the ADC presidential primary so he can look good in the eyes of young Nigerians.

“That way, his name can be honoured by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Timing is everything in politics, and this is the time of the South. Age is not on his side.

“We have very strong movements—the Obidient movement and the Kwankwassiyya movement. Those around him are not telling him what they are supposed to be telling him.”
