“They Didn’t Want To See My Face” — Atiku Reveals Why PDP Rejected Coalition Plan.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has revealed that his proposal for an opposition coalition was initially rejected by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Atiku made the disclosure during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, where he reflected on the aftermath of the PDP’s defeat in the 2023 presidential election.

According to him, he warned the party shortly after the loss that it had little political future without forming alliances with other opposition groups.

“To be frank, I was one of the major drivers of this coalition. After the PDP lost the last election, I told the party clearly that I did not see a future for the PDP without a coalition,” he said.

Atiku said party members rejected his advice at the time, even though he believed Nigeria’s political history had already shown the value of strategic alliances.

“They disagreed with me then. I have studied Nigeria’s political evolution and how alliances have shaped power transitions, so it was not difficult for me to foresee this,” he stated.

He added that his support for coalition politics was also influenced by his belief in younger politicians whom he sees as the country’s future leaders.

“I saw some of these younger politicians as the future leaders of Nigeria, so I felt it was my responsibility to point that out,” he said.

However, Atiku claimed the opposition he faced within the party was driven more by personal bias than by disagreement with his ideas.

“They disagreed with me simply because they did not want to see my face, not because of what I was proposing,” he said.

The 2027 presidential hopeful added that recent political developments have now vindicated his position on the need for a united opposition front.

Yilwatda made the statement on Wednesday during a media chat in Abuja, stressing that membership of the APC is voluntary and not forced on anyone.

“If he wants to join the APC, he is free. We don’t compel people to join; they do so willingly,” he said.

He added that cross-party appointments are not new in Nigeria’s political history, noting that past administrations also appointed members of opposition parties into key positions.

Yilwatda cited examples such as Bala Mohammed and Adamu Aliero, who served as ministers under PDP governments despite being affiliated with other parties at the time.

He questioned the criticism directed at President Bola Tinubu over Wike’s appointment, arguing that similar decisions were taken by previous administrations without controversy.

The APC chairman also pointed to other non-APC members serving in the current government, saying Wike should not be singled out.

He further stated that Wike obtained approval from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before accepting the ministerial appointment in 2023.

Yilwatda maintained that President Tinubu has continued to demonstrate openness by appointing individuals across party lines based on competence.
