The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has declared that the National Assembly will not allow Plateau State to slip further into violence or be defined by years of insecurity.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Abbas made the statement on Tuesday in Jos during a special dialogue and security conference organised by a House ad hoc committee on security challenges in the state.

Represented by lawmaker John Dafaan, the Speaker described the event as a national effort aimed at addressing the root causes of recurring violence and restoring lasting peace.

He said the gathering reflected the legislature’s commitment to confronting insecurity in Plateau State and other parts of the country with honesty and decisive action.

The conference, themed “Restoring Stability and Unity: A Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Security in Plateau State and Beyond,” brought together political leaders, traditional rulers, security agencies, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to develop lasting solutions.

Abbas highlighted the scale of violence in the state, noting that thousands have been killed since 2001 in communal and terrorist-related attacks across several local government areas.

He also recalled recent incidents between 2023 and 2024, including the Christmas Eve attacks that claimed over 200 lives across multiple communities.

According to him, more than 18,000 houses, places of worship, and farmlands have been destroyed, while about 80,000 people have been displaced over the years.

The Speaker stressed that the crisis goes beyond ethnic or religious explanations, pointing instead to deeper issues such as land disputes, political marginalisation, and economic pressures.

He added that the National Assembly is already reviewing security-related laws and pushing for improved funding for intelligence, modern equipment, and personnel welfare.

Abbas further assured that the legislature would prioritise rebuilding efforts, including support for displaced persons, trauma care, and reconstruction of destroyed communities in upcoming budgets.

Earlier, the committee chairman, Wale Hammed, said the initiative followed growing calls from Plateau residents for urgent intervention, noting that President Bola Tinubu had made the state a priority in security response efforts.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented by his deputy, Josephine Piyo, welcomed the dialogue, describing it as a timely step toward addressing long-standing insecurity challenges in the state.

According to reports, the governor stated this in a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju.

Makinde was reacting to concerns over the proposed use of the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for its presidential campaign rally.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to visit Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on November 21 for the APC rally scheduled to hold at Mapo Hall.

The planned event comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the proposed venue attracting public attention.

Addressing the issue, Makinde maintained that public facilities belong to the people of Oyo State and should be managed transparently and fairly, without political bias.

According to him, “public assets belong to the people of Oyo State and must be administered in a manner that is transparent, equitable, and devoid of partisan considerations.”

The governor stressed that his administration remains committed to ensuring a level playing field for all political stakeholders, irrespective of their party affiliations. He added that democracy thrives when political parties have equal opportunities to engage with voters within the confines of the law.

Makinde further explained that access to government-owned facilities is subject to established procedures and regulations designed to ensure proper use, maintenance and public order.

He stated that any political party or organisation that meets the stipulated requirements should not be subjected to discrimination or unfair restrictions when seeking to use such facilities.

The governor also urged political actors to conduct their activities peacefully and responsibly. He called on relevant authorities to handle requests for public facilities professionally, fairly and without prejudice.

The statement reaffirmed the Oyo State Government’s commitment to promoting political tolerance, safeguarding democratic freedoms and creating an environment where legitimate political activities can take place in accordance with the law.
