The former Argentina captain leaves less than a year after guiding Inter Miami to its first-ever MLS Cup title and a historic 2025 campaign.

In a farewell message, Mascherano said he had decided to end his time with the club due to personal reasons.

He thanked the club for the trust placed in him, appreciated the efforts of the staff and players, and praised the fans for their unwavering support.

Mascherano said the club’s first major trophy and the memories created during his time in charge would always remain special to him.

Inter Miami’s managing owner, Jorge Mas, paid tribute to the departing coach, describing him as a key figure in one of the club’s greatest eras.

He said Mascherano would always remain an important part of Inter Miami’s history because of his leadership, work ethic, and the milestones achieved under his watch.

Mascherano’s first season in charge was filled with remarkable success.

Under his leadership, Inter Miami won the MLS Cup and Eastern Conference title, while scoring 101 goals across the regular season and playoffs — the highest tally ever recorded in a single Major League Soccer season.

The club also set a new postseason record with 20 goals and played 58 matches in all competitions.

On the international stage, Inter Miami reached the knockout phase of the FIFA Club World Cup, becoming the first MLS side to achieve the feat.

The team also made history as the first Concacaf club to defeat European opposition in an official international fixture and the first U.S. team to record a win in the tournament.

Regionally, the club reached the semi-finals of the Concacaf Champions Cup and also made it to another Leagues Cup final.

Mascherano leaves alongside the coaching staff that joined him in January 2024.

Assistant coach Guillermo Hoyos will take charge of the team on an interim basis for upcoming matches, while chief soccer officer Alberto Marrero will assume sporting director responsibilities as the club begins its search for a permanent replacement.

According to reports, the governor stated this in a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju.

Makinde was reacting to concerns over the proposed use of the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for its presidential campaign rally.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to visit Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on November 21 for the APC rally scheduled to hold at Mapo Hall.

The planned event comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the proposed venue attracting public attention.

Addressing the issue, Makinde maintained that public facilities belong to the people of Oyo State and should be managed transparently and fairly, without political bias.

According to him, “public assets belong to the people of Oyo State and must be administered in a manner that is transparent, equitable, and devoid of partisan considerations.”

The governor stressed that his administration remains committed to ensuring a level playing field for all political stakeholders, irrespective of their party affiliations. He added that democracy thrives when political parties have equal opportunities to engage with voters within the confines of the law.

Makinde further explained that access to government-owned facilities is subject to established procedures and regulations designed to ensure proper use, maintenance and public order.

He stated that any political party or organisation that meets the stipulated requirements should not be subjected to discrimination or unfair restrictions when seeking to use such facilities.

The governor also urged political actors to conduct their activities peacefully and responsibly. He called on relevant authorities to handle requests for public facilities professionally, fairly and without prejudice.

The statement reaffirmed the Oyo State Government’s commitment to promoting political tolerance, safeguarding democratic freedoms and creating an environment where legitimate political activities can take place in accordance with the law.
