Mixed Reactions As Ogun Assembly Reportedly Becomes One-Party Legislature.

Published

The political composition of the Ogun State House of Assembly has been completely altered, effectively becoming a one-party legislature dominated by the All Progressives Congress (APC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

What began in 2023 as a divided House, with 17 APC lawmakers and 9 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members, has now shifted entirely in favour of the ruling party after the defection of the remaining PDP legislators.

The final collapse of opposition presence followed the defection of six PDP lawmakers to the APC, leaving the Assembly with no minority representation.

Gradual Collapse of Opposition Strength

The decline began in November 2023 after a legal dispute over the Ikenne State Constituency, when the Court of Appeal in Lagos nullified the election of PDP lawmaker Babajide Owoduni and ordered that APC’s Olakunle Sobukanla be issued a Certificate of Return.

This reduced PDP’s strength in the House to eight members.

The weakening continued in 2025 when two PDP lawmakers, Rasheed Kashamu (Ijebu North I) and Lukman Atobatele (Abeokuta South I), defected to the APC, further shrinking the opposition bloc.

The final wave of defections came after the APC National Convention in Abuja, where the remaining six PDP lawmakers formally moved to the ruling party, cementing APC’s full control of the Assembly.

The defectors include Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye (Odogbolu), Lawal Samusideen (Ogun Waterside), Adesanya Oluseun Samuel (Ijebu North-East), Owode Waliu Ifedolapo (Ijebu East), Bello Oluwadamilare (Sagamu I), and Dickson Kolawole Awolaja (Remo North).

Adeleye confirmed the move, citing internal crises within the PDP and describing alignment with the ruling party as a strategic political decision ahead of future elections.

PDP Reacts, Calls Move Betrayal

The PDP in Ogun State condemned the defections, describing them as a betrayal of voters and the party structure that brought the lawmakers into office.

The party argued that while the lawmakers retained their seats, they had abandoned the platform on which they were elected, calling for them to resign if they no longer identified with the PDP.

APC Celebrates Development

The APC, however, described the development as a reflection of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s performance and the party’s growing acceptance in the state, saying political stability would enhance governance and development.

Analysts Raise Concern

A public affairs analyst warned that the emergence of a one-party legislature poses risks to democratic balance, arguing that it limits opposition voices and reduces political choice for citizens.

He stressed that lawmakers must prioritize the constitution and the electorate above party interests in carrying out their duties.

According to reports, the governor stated this in a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju.

Makinde was reacting to concerns over the proposed use of the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for its presidential campaign rally.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to visit Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on November 21 for the APC rally scheduled to hold at Mapo Hall.

The planned event comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the proposed venue attracting public attention.

Addressing the issue, Makinde maintained that public facilities belong to the people of Oyo State and should be managed transparently and fairly, without political bias.

According to him, “public assets belong to the people of Oyo State and must be administered in a manner that is transparent, equitable, and devoid of partisan considerations.”

The governor stressed that his administration remains committed to ensuring a level playing field for all political stakeholders, irrespective of their party affiliations. He added that democracy thrives when political parties have equal opportunities to engage with voters within the confines of the law.

Makinde further explained that access to government-owned facilities is subject to established procedures and regulations designed to ensure proper use, maintenance and public order.

He stated that any political party or organisation that meets the stipulated requirements should not be subjected to discrimination or unfair restrictions when seeking to use such facilities.

The governor also urged political actors to conduct their activities peacefully and responsibly. He called on relevant authorities to handle requests for public facilities professionally, fairly and without prejudice.

The statement reaffirmed the Oyo State Government’s commitment to promoting political tolerance, safeguarding democratic freedoms and creating an environment where legitimate political activities can take place in accordance with the law.
