Ex-Presidential Candidate Questions INEC Chair’s Integrity Claim.

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has expressed concern over the integrity of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, following controversy surrounding an alleged account linked to him.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Adebayo said the matter goes beyond technical issues and touches on public trust in Nigeria’s electoral umpire, should the account eventually be confirmed as belonging to the INEC chair despite his denial.

He said such a development would raise serious questions about credibility and integrity, stressing that the electoral body depends heavily on public confidence.

According to him, while digital content can be manipulated, forensic tools exist to trace ownership of online accounts, and the issue could be addressed through legal or legislative processes if necessary.

Adebayo suggested that either the courts or the National Assembly could investigate the matter to establish the truth.

However, he clarified that even if the account were proven to belong to Amupitan, it would not automatically disqualify him from holding the position, noting that the law only requires that an INEC chairman must not be a member of any political party at the time of appointment.

He further emphasized that the real concern is honesty and trust, warning that any perception of dishonesty could undermine confidence in the electoral process.
