reports that the incident occurred on Saturday at Jilli Market, situated between Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State and Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State.

According to sources who spoke with Daily Trust, the market was filled with traders and buyers from nearby communities when the airstrike occurred.

The weekly market serves residents from Gubio, Chiweram and Benisheikh in Borno State, as well as Gurokayeya and Geidam in Yobe State.

Local sources said the operation was believed to be part of a military offensive targeting suspected Boko Haram insurgents, who were reportedly using the market to collect levies and source supplies.

However, the strike was said to have missed its intended target.

An eyewitness said the incident happened around 2:46 p.m. while commercial activities were still ongoing.

According to the witness, four fighter jets were involved in the operation, though the fourth aircraft was not clearly seen, while multiple explosions were heard during the attack.

The eyewitness claimed to have counted 56 bodies and assisted in rescuing two injured victims who were taken to hospital, adding that the casualty figure could rise as more bodies were still being recovered.

The councillor representing Fichimaram Ward, Malam Lawan Zanna, also confirmed the incident, saying several injured victims were taken to the Specialist Hospital in Geidam.

He said the airstrike hit Jilli village’s weekly market under Fichimaram Ward in Geidam LGA, adding that residents fled in panic as the bombardment continued.

Zanna stated that more than 20 injured victims were admitted at the Geidam hospital, while two others were referred to the Teaching Hospital in Damaturu.

He added that nine of those receiving treatment later died, pushing the death toll beyond 30.

Reacting to the development, the Special Adviser to the Yobe State Governor on Security Matters, Brigadier General Abdulsalam Dahiru (retd.), confirmed the attack but clarified that the affected location falls within Borno State.

He said he had spoken with the Geidam Local Government chairman, who confirmed that Jilli village is under Gubio LGA of Borno State.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Air Force had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
