Olukoyede Slams ‘EFCC Witch-Hunt’ Claims, Charges Media on Professionalism and Integrity

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has urged journalists to uphold editorial integrity and practice responsible reporting in support of the anti-corruption fight.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on Thursday in Abuja at the VON Forum 2025, themed “51 Years of Nigeria’s Role in Deepening Democratic Stability in ECOWAS,” organised by Voice of Nigeria in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Olukoyede warned against what he described as misleading and premature media narratives.

He criticised sections of the media for allegedly framing EFCC operations in political terms, citing a recent case involving the arrest of a politically exposed individual linked to the alleged disappearance of about $35 million meant for a refinery project.

According to him, some reports the following day wrongly described the operation as political persecution, rather than focusing on the facts behind the arrest.

Olukoyede insisted that the EFCC operates independently of political influence and continues to make progress in its anti-corruption mandate.

He also called on the media to support the fight against corruption by ensuring balanced and factual reporting, stressing that responsible journalism is key to national stability.

The EFCC boss further claimed that a federal property occupied by Voice of Nigeria was recovered from a former government official as proceeds of crime, describing it as evidence that the anti-corruption campaign is yielding results.

He urged unity in the fight against corruption, adding that journalists must avoid divisive reporting that could undermine public trust in institutions.

On broader security concerns, Olukoyede highlighted the growing threat of terrorist financing and disclosed efforts to strengthen regional cooperation through the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa, which he currently chairs.

He said the initiative, recently adopted by ECOWAS, would enable coordinated investigations and intelligence sharing among member states in the coming months.

According to him, the goal is to eliminate barriers to cross-border investigations and enhance regional stability through joint action.

Earlier, the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, Jibrin Baba Ndace, praised Nigeria’s longstanding role in promoting peace and democracy within ECOWAS, noting its contributions to several West African countries over the years.

According to reports, the governor stated this in a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju.

Makinde was reacting to concerns over the proposed use of the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for its presidential campaign rally.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to visit Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on November 21 for the APC rally scheduled to hold at Mapo Hall.

The planned event comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the proposed venue attracting public attention.

Addressing the issue, Makinde maintained that public facilities belong to the people of Oyo State and should be managed transparently and fairly, without political bias.

According to him, “public assets belong to the people of Oyo State and must be administered in a manner that is transparent, equitable, and devoid of partisan considerations.”

The governor stressed that his administration remains committed to ensuring a level playing field for all political stakeholders, irrespective of their party affiliations. He added that democracy thrives when political parties have equal opportunities to engage with voters within the confines of the law.

Makinde further explained that access to government-owned facilities is subject to established procedures and regulations designed to ensure proper use, maintenance and public order.

He stated that any political party or organisation that meets the stipulated requirements should not be subjected to discrimination or unfair restrictions when seeking to use such facilities.

The governor also urged political actors to conduct their activities peacefully and responsibly. He called on relevant authorities to handle requests for public facilities professionally, fairly and without prejudice.

The statement reaffirmed the Oyo State Government’s commitment to promoting political tolerance, safeguarding democratic freedoms and creating an environment where legitimate political activities can take place in accordance with the law.
