₦3.6B Fraud Case: EFCC Challenges Verdict Clearing Omatsuli And Firms!.

Published

on

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed a detailed appeal at the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, challenging the acquittal of former Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Executive Director, Touyo Omatsuli, and three others over an alleged ₦3.645 billion money laundering scheme.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The appeal follows the Federal High Court, Lagos, ruling by Justice Daniel Osiagor, which discharged and acquitted the defendants on all 46 counts, including money laundering, conspiracy, and failure to comply with statutory reporting obligations.

The respondents in the appeal include Don Parker Properties Limited, Francis Momoh, and Building Associates Limited. The EFCC is represented by a team of lawyers led by E.E. Iheanacho (SAN), alongside Bilikisu Bala Buhari, Emenike Mgbenmele, O.S. Ujam, Famen Anum, M.A. Babatunde, and Lydia Ebenezer.

In its Notice of Appeal, the EFCC argued that the trial court erred in law and failed to properly evaluate extensive evidence, including testimonies from 16 witnesses and numerous documents. The Commission also contended that the court ignored prior appellate rulings affirming that a prima facie case had been established against the defendants.

The EFCC maintained that the trial judge wrongly concluded that no evidence linked the respondents to the alleged offences, despite earlier appellate findings supporting the credibility of the prosecution’s evidence. It further argued that the ₦3.645 billion traced to the first respondent represented unlawful gratification rather than legitimate payments, and that the funds were laundered through proxies and corporate accounts to acquire high-value properties.

According to the Commission, the alleged scheme involved:

  • The first respondent nominating accounts to receive funds
  • The third and fourth respondents facilitating transfers and conversions
  • Acquisition of properties via corporate entities and foreign currency transactions to conceal origins
  • Post-investigation cover-up actions, including restructuring ownership, relinquishing shares, and creating backdated documents

The EFCC criticized the trial court for relying on selective portions of cross-examination while ignoring the full scope of the prosecution’s case. It argued that there were no material contradictions in the testimonies of key witnesses, and that documentary exhibits corroborated their evidence.

The Commission also maintained that the court misinterpreted anti-corruption laws, including the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act and the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, which prohibit public officers from receiving benefits tied to official duties.

On criminal intent, the EFCC argued that knowledge of wrongdoing can be inferred from surrounding circumstances, as provided under the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, and that the companies involved failed to report suspicious transactions, as required by law.

The EFCC is urging the Court of Appeal to set aside the Federal High Court’s judgment, allow the appeal, convict the respondents, and issue any further orders deemed appropriate in the case.

‘Men In Nigerian Politics Are Ass Lickers’ – Aisha Yesufu Fires At Male Politicians.

Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has criticised Nigerian male politicians, describing them as submissive and cowardly while arguing that women in politics are generally bolder and more willing to stand their ground.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Yesufu made the remarks while reacting to a social media post that described Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the state’s “first female governor.”

The post on X featured a video of Fubara declaring the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, as the leader of political actors in Rivers State.

Fubara made the declaration on Tuesday during the unveiling of candidates of the Rainbow Coalition for the 2027 elections at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt.

During the event, the governor said those who supported him throughout the political crisis in Rivers State should recognise that they now belonged to the same political family under the Rainbow Coalition led by Wike.

He also pledged his full support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid and the victory of all Rainbow Coalition candidates in Rivers State in the 2027 elections.

Reacting to the development, Yesufu said Fubara’s actions reflected what she considered a common trait among male politicians, whom she accused of being quick to submit to political leaders.

In her post on X, the activist argued that women in politics were often more courageous and willing to defend their positions, challenging men to demonstrate greater conviction.

She wrote, “That is the typical behavior of Nigerian MEN in politics. They are quick to grovel, ass lickers and very cowardly!!

“The women are usually bolder and can stand their grounds.

“Please own your gender with your full chest!!!!!”

Speaking during an interview on Trust TV’s Daily Politics, the Kaduna governor reaffirmed his deep respect for El-Rufai, stressing that he would not publicise every action he had taken to show his regard for him.

According to Sani, respect for someone does not require making private gestures or acts of support public.

“As a matter of respect, many things I’ve done to show my respect for him, my regard for him, I don’t think I should come out and say it. Because when you respect someone, you don’t come out to say certain things,” he said.

Nigeria Would Be So Rich If Everybody Left Money In The Bank – Peter Obi.

Published

on

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said Nigeria could have accumulated significant wealth if public funds had been consistently kept in banks to generate interest rather than being mismanaged.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Obi made the remark during an interview with a radio station in Nasarawa State on Wednesday.

According to the former Anambra State governor, the country’s financial position would have been considerably stronger if public office holders had protected government funds and allowed them to earn interest in financial institutions.

“I wish everybody in this country left money in the bank; they have interest. Nigeria would have been so rich that we don’t know what to do with money,” he said.

Obi disclosed that his administration kept public funds in three different banks, stressing the importance of safeguarding government resources.

He also criticised what he described as a culture of dishonesty in Nigeria, arguing that individuals who act with integrity are often targeted by those seeking to discredit them.

“Nigeria is a criminalised place. The criminals will always come together to show what the honest person did,” he stated.

The NDC presidential candidate further lamented what he described as a reversal of moral values, where honesty is treated as wrongdoing while criminal conduct appears to be tolerated.

“In Nigeria, to be honest is to be a criminal. To be criminal is to be honest,” Obi said.

He reiterated that Nigeria could have built greater financial reserves if successive leaders had consistently protected public funds and allowed them to generate returns instead of diverting them.

“We would have been worth so much that we don’t know what to do with money,” he added.

Obi also addressed questions about his administration’s approach to publicising government projects, explaining that he believed the results of governance should speak for themselves because the projects were funded with taxpayers’ money.

“We did what we were doing with public money, so the public already see us working, so why are we going to do the ceremony or showing it on TV? Maybe I was wrong, but that was what happened,” he said.

The former governor also defended his record in basic education, maintaining that Anambra State performed exceptionally well in the sector during his tenure.

“I was the best in education, basic education as a governor. You can go and check the records,” Obi said.
