Motsepe Supports Corruption Probe Amid AFCON Title Controversy!.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe has expressed full support for any investigation into corruption within the Confederation of African Football (CAF), following the controversy surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The call for scrutiny comes after Senegal’s government demanded an inquiry when the country was stripped of the AFCON title and the trophy handed to Morocco’s national team by a CAF appeals board. Senegal has since lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport as tensions continue to rise.
Motsepe made his stance clear during a visit to Dakar, where he met with Bassirou Diomaye Faye and other football officials. He said:
“I welcome any investigation into corruption at CAF, whether by a government, an authority, or any other body. Any corruption in CAF must be addressed, and we will act immediately. We have a duty to the people of Africa. If any institution wishes to conduct an investigation, please do so—we will fully cooperate and even encourage it.”
The crisis stems from the AFCON final in Rabat on 18 January, where Senegal initially walked off the pitch in protest over a late penalty awarded to Morocco. Senegal returned, and the penalty taken by Brahim Diaz was saved before Senegal won 1-0 after extra time. Despite the on-field result, CAF overturned the outcome on 17 March and awarded the title to Morocco.
The fallout has shaken confidence in African football leadership, leading to the resignation of former CAF General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba on 29 March.
Motsepe emphasized that corruption will not be tolerated under his leadership:
“While I am president of CAF, we will never conceal corruption. It is a major problem, not just in football. We must set a positive example for our children—success should never come through corruption. We are committed to implementing laws, intervening where necessary, and ensuring accountability in African football.”
