The opposition figures made the call on Wednesday during a peaceful #OccupyINEC protest in Abuja, warning against what they described as a drift toward one-party rule and demanding that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) remain impartial.
The demonstration, held at INEC headquarters, brought together opposition leaders and supporters, who insisted that the electoral body should not act as an agent of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking to journalists at the protest, Peter Obi emphasized Nigerians’ right to freely choose their leaders.
“We are holding a peaceful demonstration to say that we cannot have a one-party system in our country. Nigeria is a democracy. We are appealing to those in government: do not destroy our democracy. We need it for our children and generations to come. Nigerians must have the freedom to choose who leads them. This is crucial for our nation,” he said.
Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, also criticised the administration, stating, “Imagine a president who came to power and the first thing he did was to change the national anthem… and left us with hunger. He promised roads, but we have seen none. The money is gone. By the grace of God, they will lose the election.”
